Settling

My lover and I were wrapped in each other's arms. She was holding me tightly my waist tightly as I stroked my finger through her hair. My lover looked up at me and smiled.

"I can't wait to marry you. You are the only person I want to end up with." I smiled sweetly at her and just nodded my head. I normally answer the same but one of our old conversations has been popping in my head lately.

She dropped her smile and looked at me curiously. "Love, what's on your mind?"

"Nothing." The look on her face showed me that she wasn't buying it. "It's just something we talked about a long time ago."

She looked away from me. Our conversations weren't always sunshine back then. "You know everything I said then I didn't mean, right? I was young and dumb." She paused and looked back into my eyes. "Which conversation was it, love?"

"You once told me we never ended up with who we wanted. The one we truly want to marry wants to marry someone else. In the end we just settle down. And in that same breathe you declared that you were going to marry me. It just scares me every time you say you're going to marry me because all I think is about how you are settling."

"My love.. you are the one I want to marry. You have been since before that conversation. I was  scared of getting to close to you because just in case you pulled away. It was another wall I had built. That's a wall you broke. I do want to marry you, I want to end up with you." She hugged me tightly. I felt her slightly shake from sobbing. I squeezed her tightly.

"I know you do love. And you will. You will marry me. We will grow old together and have plenty of children and grandchildren. We'll sip iced tea on our front porch while sitting in rocking chairs." I started to sound a little hysteric so I just hugged my sweet lover tighter.

In that moment I knew that she did want to marry me and I wanted to marry her as well. I pulled up on her and looked deeply into her and without saying words I kissed my future wife with all my love.
