"Friendship is a single
soul in two bodies."
-Aristotle.The bright sun seeping into the room from the window was what woke me up. I opened my eyes and immediately felt a stab of pain in my head. I had a very bad headache.
I sat up in bed and my whole body ached. It was as if logs of wood had replaced my limbs. I looked around my room noticing that the sun was really high up in the sky which meant it was mid morning already. Then I looked around once again and noticed that Elena was nowhere to be found.
I had probably over slept and Elena had not been sent to wake me up. Which was strange. Really, really strange.
As if on cue, Elena came into the room and curtsied. Then she said, "Good morning your highness."
I noticed the silly smirk lurking on Elena's face and the laughter in her voice. This was really strange.
I said,"You seem really happy this morning Elena. Any particular reason?"
Elena smiled and said, "No your highness. Not that I know of."
I said, "Father is probably waiting to award me my death sentence for getting up late."
Elena said, "On the contrary, he was the one who asked me to leave you alone until whatever time you woke up yourself ."
I stared at Elena unable to believe what I just heard. I said, "Father? As in the King?"
Elena nodded and said, "Yes your highness. As in the King. He said, you must be very tired after yesterday's ceremony and gave strict orders for you to be left alone to rest."
I was super shocked by this. Father would never in a million years allow me to 'rest'. He was all for getting up and being super active. Then as if cold water had been poured on me, last night's events dawned on me.
I remembered it all, from the ceremony to the drink and to Lemuel.
I must have obviously pleased Father so much for him to give me such special treatment. I said," Where's everyone?"
Elena said, "In the dinning hall having breakfast. The guests are still around your highness."
I nodded and jumped out of bed. Took a quick shower, got dressed and went to the dinning hall for breakfast.
I joined my family at the table. Father was at the head as usual. Mother by his left, Keziah and her fiance at his right. Then the triplets and their fiances. Then Jemimah and Sapphira facing each other. So, I sat on the chair facing Emerald since it was empty and also because that was where I pretty much sat.
The family members of the triplets' fiance were still around. They were going to be for the next couple of days. They and some other important people of the kingdom constituted the others that sat at the table.
I said, "Good Morning Everyone. Father, Mother Sisters, Nobles. Everyone."
Despite my funny greeting, Father actually smiled at me and said, "Good Morning Keren-happuch." Then turning to the guests he said, "I'm sure you remember my youngest daughter Keren-happuch."
I bent my head slightly as the maid served my food. Father seemed to be in a good mood today or rather I must have entered his good books because he had smiled at me. He hadn't complained about my getting up late. He had even passed orders for me to be left alone. For someone like me, that was a lot.
Father said, "From what I saw last night Keren, you seem to have struck something with Lemuel."
I was shocked by what I had just heard. My Father, the King of Millania had just called me by the shortened form of my name: Keren. Never in my life did I think that was going to happen. Which only points to the fact that Father was probably happy with what happened last night.
