MAY 2ND, 1964
Evangeline sat in her room on her small bed with her back up against the headboard. The young girl sighed in boredom while taking a drag from her almost finished cigarette, waiting. Evangeline didn't want to admit it but she was waiting for the man supposedly named John to call. Evangeline didn't know exactly why she was waiting for the mystery man to call. But she knew that he made her laugh and smile which was something she hasn't done in a long time.
At the same time it was also Saturday and usually she had nothing to do on the weekends besides sit in her room or go downstairs to watch the telly. Evangeline wasn't really a social kind of person where she could make friend easily. She was often quiet around other people and when someone besides her friend David tries to talk to her she usually tells them to sod off.
After ten more minutes of waiting Evangeline was about to get up and go down stairs to watch the telly. She was tired of waiting and didn't want to wait all day for a call from a man she didn't even know. All she knew about him was that he was in his twenties, was named John, and was a goofy person. She didn't know why on earth she would be waiting for this man to call. She snapped out of her thoughts and just as she was about to get up the rotary phone started to ring.
Evangeline snapped her head towards the phone on her bedside table and waited for her mother to tell her the phone was for her. The young girl sat eagerly with her legs criss crossed and her hand just above the phone.
"Evangeline, its for you!" Called her mother from downstairs making Evangeline smile big and lick her lips.
"I got it!" Called Evangeline back to her mother as Evangeline then quickly picked up the plastic phone and put it up to her ear.
                              E: Ello? John?
D: Were you right beside the phone this whole time Evangeline? It usually takes you a while to pick up the phone
                              E: (sighs disappointedly) Hi Davy
D: Wow, are you that disappointed to hear my voice? If anything you should be happy to hear from me. I could be dead or something!
E: Davy the day you die is the day my heart will lie within my broken body.
D: Glad to know you care Evangeline. But who's John?
                              E: Nobody Davy
D: Is he a boy you like? You have to tell me the details Evangeline! Is he cute?
E: Davy I love you to death but honestly he's someone I just met. He's no one you would know.
D: Well now you just sparked my interest! Wait a second, if you were expecting him instead of me then that means you must really like him. Oh my gayness my best friend actually likes someone!
                              E: Davy-
D: He makes you laugh doesn't he?
E: What? How would you know?
D: Because I know my best friend and I know that besides me and your brother we are the only ones that have seen you actually smile. Plus your mum called me telling me about how you were giggling like a school girl
E: I swear Davy you are my mothers gossip partner. I smile all the time Davy. What do you mean?
D: I mean where you are generally happy! I can hear it in your voice!
E: Okay Davy I'm going to hang up now.
D: Alright fine, but please don't shut me out. You know I'm always here for you Evangeline.
E: I know Davy. Now don't be getting all soft on me you arse.
                              D: (chuckles) Bye Evangeline
                              E: Bye Davy
Once Evangeline hung up the rotary phone she sighed slumping back against her headboard. She was really hoping for John to call her back and make her day. The young Starkey had to admit that each day that passes she is itching to hear from John and to hear his quirky sense of humor. With the thought of John out of her mind she then remembered what David said on the phone before they hug up.
"Mum! I know you are listening on the other line! What else have you told Davy about me?" Called Evangeline from her room to downstairs where her mother was talking with David on the other line in a hushed voice.
Once Mrs. Starkey heard her daughters loud holler she squealed and jumped in surprise. Once the thought of her being caught by her daughter she hung up the phone after saying a farewell to David. Evangeline rolled her eyes with a small smile still wondering how her mother didn't know Davy was queer.
