Chapter Six:
Second Chance

Ray

Sweaty but tender hands touched my four broken fingers on my left hand. My thumb was intact, but the pain spread throughout my whole arm. Natasha wrapped my broken fingers with a gauze, tightly but ever so carefully. I winced once or twice, then yanked my hand away to finish up the wrapping myself.

She had sad eyes that I couldn't fix. Those were one of her flaws; always being upset with me when she should be proud I saved her's and the other's god damn lives. The four of us made it out of the quarantine alive but bruised up, so we settled down a few miles away from the quarantine. Ben and Zach were, horribly, starting the fire.

"You have to do it like this." Zach would tell Ben various times and demonstrating how to rub the wood together. Reaching into my right pocket, I take out my lighter and whistle at the two dumb asses. I get Ben's attention and then throw the lighter into his hands. "Shut up and light it up." Ben nods and the lighter flickers, burning the broken branches from the trees.

"Ray, maybe we should go back." Natasha speaks to me softly. Her fingers caress my broken fingers, giving each of them a peck from her lips. "We can't go back to the quar-"

"I'm talking about home."
I look at her with seriousness, "That place won't be our home anymore."
Natasha furrows her brows, obviously confused. "What do you mean?"

Sighing, I tell her, "I wasn't actually planning on going back to the Fireflies after I've scavenged for everything we need for our own home. Our own sanctuary. A place where you and I can grow old together. Isolated and only dependent on each other. Look what happened Natasha; we were in a group of eight.. of EIGHT... and now we're separated because of ONE GODDAMN KID!"

Her fingers slip away from mine, and she stares at me, frightened of my yelling. "Does Zach and Ben know of this, of your plan to ditch the Fireflies?"

I look away, and look towards where Zach and Ben cooked a rabbit they caught in the woods nearby. "No." I say to her. They shouldn't know. "We won't need them after we're finished collecting what we need at the quarantine."

"I feel like there's something more behind this plan of yours."

Tightening my right hand's fist, I stand up to go take a walk. I needed her out of my business. "Ray! Where are you going?!"

"Taking a walk; what does it look like?" I groaned in annoyance.

Unintentionally kicking an empty can on the floor, a hand grabs my shoulder to stop me from walking any further. Her lips graze my ear as she whispers, "Don't do anything you'll regret... I'd hate to see you get hurt again..."

"The only person who's going to get hurt is Luis--"
I turn around so that Ben and Zach were now in view as well, "We leave once the sun rises." Ben nods and puts out the fire since the rabbit was done cooking.

"Zach, check how much ammunition there is in every gun we have. Natasha, please, sit down, eat and rest." I kiss her cheek and leave them all to their doings. As for I, continued to walk down the street.

By the time the sky was pitch black, I remembered that I left my lighter with Ben. All I had was my knife and it was all I needed at the moment. I finally heard it, the harsh breathing of an infected. It grew louder as I reached a pharmacy, walls covered in green moss and blood.

I take out my knife and prepare for anything that comes out at me. Now, the breathing didn't come from in front of me, but behind me. Spinning around, I'm tackled down and scratched at by the infected I was hunting down. Jabbing my knife at it, I finally stab it's neck, giving it a deep cut. It struggles for a moment, whimpers, then dies.

Pushing the damn thing off of me, I keep stabbing it's neck, cutting it's head off. All of it's dark blood spilt out and I gag in disgust. The smell was horrid but the killing satisfied me. Standing up from the floor, I look around the pharmacy for something to impale the head with. A stick was lying on the floor and I bend down to pick it up. Walking back to the head, I grab it by it's greasy hair and push it down on the stick. Blood splattered my face and clothes, but I didn't mind. Like before, this satisfied me.

I took a long walk back to my wife and companions. I found them lying on the floor, staring at the stars. When the three of them hear my feet hitting the concrete as I walked up to them, I have their attention. Natasha's eyes widen and her hands cover her mouth in shock. Ben starts running towards a tree and holds it for support as he throws up. Zach just stares at me, not amused.

"Wh-What-- Why did you do that?" Natasha asks in bewilderment. "To show everyone what I can do." I state. Zach shakes his head to himself but I caught that. We stare each other down and he loses within seconds. "Insane." Zach says aloud and Natasha doesn't look at me the same. Instead of gaining respect, I've lost it.

I won't need them soon. I'm fine.
