Being a Babysitter/Writer

I love babysitting. It's a rewarding job but also tiring, trying to find time to write down words and kids wanting to play all of the time.

Since babysitting, my days have become long and exhausting and I have to look for ways to relax before getting time on my laptop or phone to write

Since babysitting, my days have become long and exhausting and I have to look for ways to relax before getting time on my laptop or phone to write.

My niece keeps me busy running around all over the place to play hide and seek and to watch her favorite shows. So whenever I wanted to write, she would ask questions or try to type on my laptop and in the process almost delete the chapter I'd been working on for two hours. It's like she knows my writing schedule.

If you have a babysitting job and love to write as well, here are a few tips to hopefully set your mind at ease

If you have a babysitting job and love to write as well, here are a few tips to hopefully set your mind at ease.

1. Other devices are handy

Instead of carrying your computer, have a journal or phone with a writer app to jot down your chapters.

2. Write when you have free time

Night time, during nap time, and on the weekends are some of the best times for me because I get downtime and the kids are resting and already fed for the day. Especially on weekends, I am free to do what I want.

3. Take care of yourself

My main priority has always been the kids,  which has led me to forget to take care of myself. I've been told by my parents, siblings, and friends, to focus on some self-care yet I'm so stubborn to listen. Hot showers, bubble baths, yoga, meditation are some examples of things you can do to make sure you're also looking after yourself.

4. Snacks are a benefit doing both jobs

Of course, you need a well-balanced meal -  but snacks are awesome too! Pudding and fruit cups, chips and dip, etc. are fuel for a writer's brain.

5. Take a break and engage

When writer's block hits, push the devices away and play. Kids need attention so give it to them for an hour or two to refresh and refuel your brain: ideas include coloring, playing tag, kid programs, or reading their favorite book to them.

Kids are fun and a handful, it's our jobs as babysitters to keep them happy and safe for their parents.
