chapter five

routine

after putting her brother to bed for the fifth time that night, (y/n) collapsed onto the long, white sofa in the living room. she couldn't even bring herself to click the tv on as her eyelids fell heavy over her eyes; her exhaustion bone deep.

tomorrow was her first day at college. well, at this one. since her small family of three had had to move after her mother got a promotion that required her to move closer to the city. it was bittersweet, really, for (y/n). she hated that she'd had to leave her friends but the college she was going to now was the best for her degree in art and it wasn't as far as her other college had been from her old house.

even though she had attempted to refuse, (y/n)'s mother bought her a car since she'd promised to drop her brother off every day. (y/n) was sure it was because she felt bad about them having to uproot and move. honestly, she didn't mind, she could still talk to her friends back home; she knew her mother was just trying her best to provide for them.

familiar wailing shattered (y/n)'s dreams and abruptly awoke her. she snapped her head to look at the clock on the cream wall behind the TV. it read quarter to seven. she wasn't late yet but if she slept any longer she would be.

rolling off the sofa, she rubbed her hands over her eyes. when she moved them away they were smudged with last night's mascara. she sighed and moved to the kitchen; grabbed a carton of milk for her brother before heading to his room.

tears of tiredness were streaming from his eyes but a look at the milk cartoon quieted his sons to little hiccups of sadness.

"I'm gonna get ready," Kageyama looked up at his sister with tired eyes and she immediately felt bad for him, "When you've finished your milk, can you choose your school clothes for me?"

she tried her hardest to pump energy into her groggy voice; it seemed to work as her younger brother gave an enthusiastic nod while slurping on his milk. after offering a thumbs up, which was not returned thanks to the cartoon of milk, she trudged into her bathroom to start her daily routine.
