Clouds of Dusk and Dawn

The shudder of the hull as it zips through the vacuumed abyss of space sends a chill down Wolfgang's spine as he strides casually down the length of the Helms more quiet hallways. As familiar as the trip was, Jäger still could not shake the nervousness in his gut. Space travel always did that to him.

Sidestepping over a pipe that had sprung from the metal bulwark and into the hall, Wolfgang stops in his tracks and peers down the dark, looming depth of the hall. Goosebumps rise on the tops of his arms, leaving his breath shallow.
"Wandering off again, I see . . . Some things still haven't changed, have they."
Turning coolly on his heels, Wolfgang smiles as Snojyn steps into the dim light of the hallway. She had changed from the complimentary jumpsuit to a pair of cargos and a jacket with a dark hood. Crossing her arms, Jyn fixes him with a firm stare.

Unwavering under her gaze, Jäger winks.
"You dyed your hair," he states in mute disappointment, looking at the black sheen that was her hair.

Stepping forward, Wolfgang lifts a hand and carefully tucks a curl behind Jyns ear.
"I liked it red."
Snojyn scoffs and steps back. "Yeah, well, red isn't exactly the smartest colour when your hiding."

Jäger flinches ever so slightly at her heartless reply. It seems time apart had changed the both of them. Standing in the hallway, silent, Wolfgang lets his eyes rest on her. He'd missed her so much.
"What happened," he whispers, finding the very words hard to muster, "between us, I mean."

Through the poor lighting, Wolfgang could see the spark in Jyn's eyes diminish. Her mouth opens slightly but hesitates, as if speaking such words would reopen old wounds.
"You left," she states dryly after a seconds hesitation. "That's what happened."

A sharp pain lances in Jägers fingertips at the apathy in her voice.
"If I remember correctly, things happened differently."
"They didn't," she nearly snaps.

At her quick retort, Wolfgang scowls and begins to pace the short width of the hall.
"Don't you shove the blame on me," he growls. "I left because you couldn't even possibly accept the idea that I wanted to stay."
Releasing a mock laugh that echoes throughout the hall, Snojyn points an accusing finger.
"It doesn't even matter, Jaeg. You proved my point! You left-"
Kicking his booted foot into the protruding pipe, Wolfgang snaps harshly.
"What would you have had me do?! You expected nothing else, Sno!"
Snojyn shakes her head sharply, "you knew that it always happened to me. You knew everyone in my life always left, and you did it anyway."
Hearing the catch in her throat, Jäger lets the steam pour out. Looking at her once more, Wolfgang could see the slouched shoulders, the limp hair and the pale expression.
"I never meant to hurt you." He says, at last, stepping forward to close the space between them.

At his step, Snojyn stiffens, folding her arms defensively. A small tear streaks down her left cheek as she tightens her jaw.
"You can't do that," taking a large step back, Snojyn stares at him with hard honey eyes. An attempt to remain professional. "I have a mission for the Syndicate. Uriel is-"

Wolfgang scoffs at the mention of her companion and the sharp turn of subject.
"That toothpick?! Jyn-Jyn, you can't be serious..."

Noting her resolved features, Wolfgang lets his arms drop. It seemed that not everything had changed about her.
Still as stubborn as a mule.
Fixing his jaw, Jäger releases a sigh.
"Which branch are you taking him to?"
Catching her before a sharp reply, Wolfgang lifts a hand.
"Don't even think about shouting me off this, Jyn. Unlike you, I know Mars, and you won't even make it to the Arch before Diego and his men find you. . . I can get you to the branch safely."
