The sun had gone down quite a bit, and the girls were still sitting on the banks of the river together, holding hands. They hadn't spoken much since the kiss, and instead were just staring into the sky. Suddenly, Cordelia spoke. "It's getting a bit cold, isn't it misty?" Misty looked up to where Cordelia was standing above her. "Yeah, it is I guess... Where are we goin?" Misty responded. Cordelia pulled misty up and said," You said your mom wouldn't be home for a while. We could go to your house?" Misty nodded, gave a small smile, and grabbed Cordelia's hand. Misty lead the way back to her house, and by the time they got there the temperature had dropped significantly. They hurried in to find the cold empty shack left alone from the past day, where you could see items strewn across the floor where misty had been attacked by her mother. Misty brought Cordelia into her room and got out a nightgown and a heavy shawl. The girls got changed and misty put on some music. They sat on the bed, talking. "So Misty, what was your childhood like?" Cordelia asked after explaining the way she grew up. "Well um... I was born here with my mama and daddy and, well then my mama got real mean and daddy well- he left." Tears started to form in Misty's eyes. "You don't have to continue-" Cordelia started, but misty cut her off. "From then mama was mean to me, tryna get men and lockin me in the closet and hittin me. But I didn't tell no one. She'd hurt me worse. I went to some other school, but got transferred here. Now I'm with you and my mamas still mean." Tears were streaming down Misty's face, as well as Cordelia's. Cordelia took Misty's hand and squeezed it, right as misty let out a loud sob and collapsed into a ball laying her head on Cordelia's lap. Cordelia stroked her hair, rubbed her back, and tried to comfort her. Misty got up after a while, still sniffling, an turned off the music. She walked back over to Cordelia and sat next to her, leaning her head on her shoulders. Cordelia put her arms around misty, and kissed her on the cheek. Sniffling, the girl laid down and slept in each others arms.

The next morning, the girls awoke to a loud banging on the door. Cordelia got up to go get it. There was a blonde woman who looked similar to misty standing, pounding at he door. "MISTY!" Cordelia yelled. Misty got up and ran to the door. She saw, turned to Cordelia and said "quick! Please get out the back door. Please. The window. Anything. I'll get to you later. Go to our spot. You remember, right?" Cordelia nodded and ran out. Misty opened the door to her mother, stumbling and cursing. "Why the HELL did you not open the god damn door mist. Don't you see ya mamas tired?" She pushed misty out of the way and laid down on the couch. "Get me some coffee ya stupid girl" her mother growled at misty. Misty looked over and walked toward the kitchen. "Uh, mama, there are no cups." She said as she got the the stove. All of a sudden she felt something hit the back if her head, hard. She picked up a tin cup from the ground and started making the coffee. When it was done, she walked it over, the cup so hot it burnt her fingertips, and gave it to her mother. He mother took one sip and spat it out. "DO YOU CALL THIS SHIT COFFEE? DO YA? WELL ILL TELL YA MIST, IT AINT COFFEE. ITS BIRD SHIT!" She took the coffee and threw it onto Misty's arm. It was so hot, misty could feel her skin blistering. "Mama... I gotta.... Go." Misty said in between choked tears. "GOOD. get out and leave. Don't come back." Misty looked at her mother and ran into her room. She grabbed her tapes, and few dresses and shawls, and the two Polaroid pictures that meant more to her than any material object. She would be back, just not for a while. She was on her way when she thought of something. Creeping out into the living room, she saw that her mother was already passed out. Misty tip-toed into the bathroom and grabbed her toothpaste and toothbrush. She opened the drawer and hesitantly grabbed the pack of razor blades. She stuffed them into one of her shawls and headed out the door to Cordelia in their meeting spot. The pain on her arm was killing her, and it was a relief to get there and be next to Cordelia. She set her things down and ran to the river bank, Cordelia close behind. Misty stuck her arm in the river, covering it in the seemingly magical mud. The cooling sensation helped. "We need ta go. De. My mama. She threw a cup at my head and hot coffee on my arms and told me to leave." Misty said through tears as she rinsed off her arm. "Ok. Come on misty. Let's go." Cordelia answered. Misty picked up her stuff and they headed toward the main road that lead to Cordelia's house.
