-Chapter 2-
Iris
“What are you doing here?” I ask, frantically ushering him into the apartment. He looks sharp and clean, as if he wasn’t on a plane for 10 hours. His suit is perfectly pressed, not a wrinkle in sight and his eyes are awake and alert.
“Just wanted to see my baby girl. Where’s Cameron?” his eyes sweep across the living space, hovering over the empty pizza box that Cam left there for me to clean up this morning. My father was always one for tidiness.
“He just left to go back to London to see some friends. Said he needed to take a break and go back home for at least one summer. I’m sure he would have moved his flight if he knew you were coming!” I explain
“Oh, it’s no big deal, sweetheart. I’ll see him when I go back. I’ll probably call him tonight, say I stopped by. The thing I’m worried about is that you’re here all alone!” he smiles at me, I’ve always been a daddy’s girl.
“It’s no big deal, Dad. I’ll be fine. After all I’m almost 20.” I smile weakly and tuck a piece of stray hair behind my ear.
“Ah, my little baby girl is growing up.” He smooths down my hair and places a delicate kiss on my forehead.
“Why don’t you stay for a little bit?” I offer, “I can grab you a beer and we could catch up?”
“Not tonight. I just dropped by to say hello, but I’ll come by in the morning and we can go to some cheesy breakfast place. I know you like those places.” His smile warms my heart. I’ve missed having him in my life. I know it has only been 2 years, but it feels like a lifetime. Dramatic but accurate.
“And you know what my work isn't the most flexible sometimes.” I nod, as I watch him run his hair through his dark hair. My mother dying wasn't the only reason I moved to America.
“I completely understand, and I’ll see you in the morning anyways, I’ve already got a place in mind.” I smile, hoping to wash away his worry. It works because he smiles back, slowly backing up to the door, signaling that it’s time for him to go. I speed ahead of him and unlock the door, opening it wide so that he can exit.
“I’ll see you tomorrow, Dad. Just call because I have work in the morning and I need a heads up.”
“Sure thing, sweetie.”
“And if you get here before I do, we keep a spare key hidden under the moss of the plant at the end of the hall.” I give him a kiss on the cheek and he is gone. vanishing down the hall. A man of mystery in everything he does.

My alarm blares through my room, beckoning me to wake up. It’s summer, I shouldn’t be working! I fling the sheets off my body and swinging my feet over the edge. I place my feet on the plush rug, curling my toes up while rubbing my eyes to free them from the fog. It’s 6 in the goddamn morning and here I am getting into a freezing shower in hopes of it waking me up. The shower helps a little bit, allowing me to do my hair and wiggle my way into some stupid pair of skinny jeans and a stupid gray button up for my stupid job in a stupid country club to be a stupid waitress for stupid people. I’ve never been a morning person
I take one last look into the mirror and I grab the keys to my Mini Cooper and my bag before rushing out the door.

My shift ends, leaving me tired and cover in spilled eggs. I rush into the parking lot, searching for my car, hoping that I won’t melt in the hot California sun. Once I spot my little black and white mini cooper, I stroll over to it while rummaging through my bag for my phone and keys.
