Chapter 6
The duo left the boat a little from shore, so that any of Lzarovich's men were there, they wouldn't be seen, that is if they hadn't been already, and swam the rest of the way to land. When they had reached land, Lara and Nate started to their next location. A large underground temple was supposed to where the artefact was, according to some very unfortunate soldiers.
So now, they were back where they started, in a forest in the dark. Small stone lanterns had been lit along a path, however, Nate and Lara were staying off it. If they were lit, it meant that they were lit by somebody. Lara held her bow in her hands, her steps silent as she crept along the growth. Nathen was behind her, his gun in hand. He had managed to find some ammo on some bodies, as well as gain a rifle, which only had a little ammo in it.
There was a howl in the distance. Lara looked up wearily, tightening her grip on her bow. Wolves were a pain to handle. They had attacked the two before, and they had been lucky to get away.
Then there was a close gunshot and a whimper. Lara signaled for Nate to stop, a beam of light turning a corner. Two guards wandered down the path, large AK-47's in their hands. They were speaking to each other, loud enough for the two survivors to hear.
"What a load of crap. A crystal that could turn somebody invincible? Sounds like a fairy tale to me," one mumbled.
"I don't know, I mean, you saw those creatures in the tunnels. Like, it took two magazines to kill them. They weren't exactly human," the other responded. The first one snorted.
"Yeah, sure; we just encountered mutated animals,"
"They weren't animals either..."
"Oh just shut up. I hope whatever Lzarovich finds in that monastery is worth all of this if he can even find it."
Lara and Nate exchanged glances, intrigued about the information this soldier was accidentally spilling.
"''You'll all be paid with immortality!'' What a load of bull," he continued. The other stopped and looked at him.
"Yeah. Hey, you go scout back there, I'll keep this place covered,"
"Sure. Good luck man," and with that, the calmer of the two left. Lara looked at Nate, gestured to kill him silently, then crept after the other one. Nate nodded silently, watching as Lara disappeared. Nate picked up a stone and threw it down the path, making the guard jump and wander to the noise. Nathen took that chance to slip behind him and wrap his arms around his neck. With a satisfying crack, his body fell to the ground. Nate quickly looted him, finding some medical equipment and bullets.
Lara scrambled into a tree, watching as the guard lit what looked like a cigar. He was grumbling something to himself, but Lara really didn't care. She jumped down, landing on top of him. She pulled out her combat knife she had borrowed from a corpse and held it tightly to his neck.
"Drop your weapons!" she spat quietly. The guard did as he was told, the gun dropping to his feet with a clatter. He took a deep breath, shaking. Lara narrowed her eyes, pressing the blade deeper into his neck. He whimpered.
"Tell me where this monastery is," Lara ordered.
"I can't. Look, man, I have a family waiting for me at home! I can't die! Look, look! I'll help you!"" he cried. Lara felt sorry for a moment, before loosening the grip on her knife. She pulled the guard's knife from his belt and flung it to the side, before getting a rope from her belt.
"Don't move, or I'll shoot you," she threatened, lowering her knife and grabbing his wrists. She wrapped them tightly with rope, before turning him around. He seemed confused for a moment before Lara raised her small pistol in warning. The guard gulped, shifting on his feet.
