Chapter Six-
“What the heck happened to you, Mally?”
“Um, my Aunt Loraine didn’t really like me-“
“What did you do to your- and your clothes!? Mally, why did she-“
“Ross, I’m fine. And I kind of like acting like a girl, it makes me feel pretty. And I’m not wearing smelly old t-shirts. She bought me a whole bunch of new clothes and stuff. It’s really cool!”
“Why?”
“Because if you haven’t noticed Ross,” Mallory starts, “I’m actually a girl. I have tits and I get my period every month. I don’t have a frickin’ dick.”
“Mally! What’s wrong with you?”
“I’m tired of acting like a nobody.”
“Well I’m tired of waking up with freakin’ hard on’s but I’m not gonna go cutting off my dick!”
Mallory pulls the rubber band from her hair and allows the strands to flow freely. Then she quickly strips off her dress, leaving her standing in a pair of undies and a bra.
“What are you doing?”
“I’m changing. If you really don’t like how I am now, I’ll just change back to being a stupid nobody, who wears baggy clothes and is miserable all the time!” She rushes to her closet and pulls out a random old t-shirt. She pulls it over her head and places a hand on her hip.
“Mally, I don’t want you to be miserable.”
“But you make it seem that way, Ross. You hate that I look different! You hate that I’m pretty!”
“You were ‘Pretty’ before!” Ross screams, the words escaping his lips before he can catch them.
Mallory raises an eyebrow and sits on the edge of her bed, placing her head in her hands. “If I was so ‘pretty’ before, why didn’t you ever tell me? Why doesn’t anyone tell me anything!? Am I that terrible to talk to?”
“Where’s this coming from? You know I tell you everything! You’re the one who doesn’t tell me everything!”
“What haven’t I told you, Ross? Please tell me what I-“
“You didn’t tell me you were going to Florida! I was worried sick! Your blinds were closed and nobody would answer the door!”
Ross kneels between Mallory’s legs and takes her hands, forcing her to lift her head from her hands. “I tried calling you, texting you, I tried to pry your window open! Nothing worked. And I didn’t know what happened to you! I thought something bad happened like you died or you-“
“I what?!”
“I thought you tried to kill yourself.”
“But I would never do that! I’m not like that! I just needed to get away for a while!”
Ross lets out a small sob and Mallory places a hand on each side of his head.
“I just needed to get out of this house.”
“You could’ve come to mine.”
“Ross, your mom doesn’t like me.”
“Are you kidding?” Ross lets out a struggled laugh, “mom loves you, and she thinks you’re a fantastic person. I think you’re a fantastic person.”
“Okay.”
“Can you do me a favor?”
“What?” Mallory asks.
“Can you at least just change into some jeans, maybe wear your baseball hat? You don’t have to wear baggy shirts, just not dresses. It makes me feel like I’m losing my girl.”
“Okay.”
“I’m sorry for yelling at you.”
“Me too.”
Ross stands again and picks a pair of jeans from Mallory’s closet. “I missed you.” He smiles, “a lot.”
“I missed you too,” Mallory takes the jeans from Ross’ possession and pulls them on, then after slipping on a tattered pair of flip-flops; she pulls her long now-blonde hair into a high pony tail.
“Here’s your hat.”
“Thank you Ross.”
She tops her outfit off with a hat and smiles. Ross wraps his arms around her. They hug for a few seconds before stepping back.
“Now, how about some ice-cream, my beautiful girl?”
“I’m in; we should take my little man. I missed him too.”
“I don’t know-“
“I actually missed him more than you. Come to think of it.”
“Oh, shut up.” Ross opens Mallory’s bedroom window, “I’ll go get him, and I’ll meet’cha at the car.”
