Chapter 2:

“Nat, are you sure this is a good idea?” Delia asked me, giving me a skeptical look from our couch.

“Why wouldn’t it be?” I was currently getting ready to head to the house Louis and the rest of One Direction were staying in for their time in LA while Delia watched TV.

“Because you barely know this guy! Sure, you know of him, but you don’t actually know anything about him.” The tone of Delia's voice was like she was speaking with a petulant child.

“Dee, that’s sort of the whole point of going to hang out; we’re going to get to know each other.” I sat next to her and slapped her thigh.

“You’re going to do what you want anyway, why do I even bother?” She sighed. “Just don’t cry to me when this thing ends badly.”

“Delia, you know I’m not looking for a relationship right now, especially not with a guy that lives in another country. I couldn’t even maintain a relationship with someone I saw every day,” I frowned, thinking of my short-lived relationship with Garrett’s friend Brian. I really liked him, but he didn’t want to put up with the way I lived my life.

“Brian was a tool, Nat, and you know it. I told you that it was a bad idea to date someone that was friends with Garrett, the King of Bad Decisions.”

I chuckled slightly. “I know you did. You’re almost always right, but that doesn’t mean that I can’t go hang out with Louis if I want to.”

“I know, Nat, just don’t get into something you don’t want to get into.”

I made a face at her. “Don’t worry about me, Dee. I’ll be fine.” I pulled my phone out and opened Twitter, scrolling through tweets and seeing what the people I was following were up to before I went to my mentions and read through those. I was used to having Silent Playground fans tweeting at me, but my mentions had increased a hell of a lot since I tweeted that picture of Louis and me at Garrett’s party. I was actually surprised at how few of the tweets were rude—you’d think from listening to other people that were connected to One Direction talk that they had the rudest fans in the world. I laughed out loud at one of the tweets. “DeDe, listen to this.”

“Hmm?” She turned her head away from where Maury was revealing paternity test results to look at me.

“’@SilentNatalie is the perfect kind of borderline trashy to be with @Louis_Tomlinson. She’s not a slut, but you know she’s secretly a freak,’” I read. “I’m borderline trashy,” I smiled.

“Are you sure that’s a compliment, Nat?” She gave me a weird look. “That person called you trashy, and you’re laughing?”

“She said ‘the perfect kind of borderline trashy.’ I love that.” I favorited the tweet and went to my Twitter bio, changing a few words. “My bio now starts with ‘The perfect kind of borderline trashy lead singer of Silent Playground.’”

“I still don’t think it was a compliment,” Delia said, shaking her head with a laugh.

“Put your rose-colored glasses on for a minute, Deels. Let me accept the back-handed compliment in peace.”

She rolled her eyes at me. “Alright, Natalie. Whatever you say.” She leaned forward and grabbed her book off of the coffee table. “Text me if you’re not coming home tonight.” Once I’d agreed, she turned to her bookmark and immersed herself into the world of whatever book she was reading. DeDe spent the majority of the time reading when she wasn’t songwriting or playing her guitar. I think that was probably why she had never had any sort of scandal; she always had her head somewhere else, thinking about whatever she had read or the new lyrics she was working on. Silent Playground would not have been as successful as we were without Delia keeping us grounded, and I loved her for it. I also loved her for being my best friend since we were nine and putting up with all of my bullshit. Delia always had my best interests at heart and made sure I knew what she thought of anything I did that could be perceived as wrong.
