Boring filler chapter but my favorite comes back. Sorry it took so long to write this, I've just had a lot of stuff happening personally. Ummm... If you haven't yet, you should read Swing Away or check out the prologues to Letting Go and Perfect Porcelain. :)
Chapter 17:
“Alright, text me when you guys are leaving the facility,” I told Lacey over the phone. “We’ve pretty much got everything ready here.”
“Are you sure the kids are behaving?” She asked for the fifth time. “I should have brought them with me, but-”
“Lacey, I promise you, they’re perfect.” I had offered to watch Lacey’s kids while she went to pick Garrett up and I helped Delia and Chase set up for the surprise welcome home dinner we were throwing Garrett. Zack is six and Indie is one and they are, for the most part, incredibly well-behaved. Indie had been napping for the majority of their time here, and Zack was following Chase around and asking if he could help.
“Okay, but if they act up, let me know. Zack can be a handful if he gets hyper.”
“Don’t worry about them, Mama Bear. Just worry about picking Garrett up and getting back here safely, and I’ll look out for the cubs.”
“That’s why she’s worrying so much,” Chase laughed as he walked by with a feather duster and giving it to Zack before lifting him up so he could dust a shelf. “I wouldn’t trust you with kids.”
I made a face at him. “Ignore Chase. Everything is fine. We’ll see you when you get here with Gare.”
“Alright, I think I’m almost to the place. Bye, Nat.”
“Bye.” I slid my phone into my pocket and went into the kitchen where DeDe was sorting the ingredients out so I could make lasagna—following Grandpa Dave’s recipe exactly. It was Garrett’s favorite meal and I was happy I’d managed to weasel the recipe out of Dave when I’d had the chance. “Thank you so much, Deeds.”
She shrugged and wiped her hands off on a hand towel. “It’s no problem. Someone had to check on the baby, and I didn’t want to be the one to do it.” Delia was afraid of hurting babies and always refused to hold them. When I heard Indie fussing on the baby monitor, DeDe had practically broken her hip rushing over to take over setting up the ingredients and stuff so I could check the baby. “I’ve got everything set up. I didn’t want to start it and mess anything up so I got the garlic bread ready and put it in the fridge til you’re ready for it to go in the oven.”
“Aright sweet. Chase and Zack are finishing cleaning, but you can go around and double-check; we know what Chase’s idea of clean is.” We both shuddered. “Lacey called while I was checking on Indie and said that she’s almost to the facility, so everything is going to schedule.” I started with the cooking as I spoke.
“Good, good. I can set the table after I make sure everything is really clean. And Mike offered to bring some wine, but I wasn’t sure if that was a good idea or not considering.”
“He can if he wants. I picked up some sparkling grape juice. Garrett and I used to love drinking that on New Year’s when my family would drink champagne and wine, so I figured it would be good for nostalgia and sobriety’s sake.”
Delia nodded. “I’ll let Mike know. Whatever he decides to do works for me.” Just as she was about to leave the kitchen, she stopped and turned back to me. “How’s the boo?”
I smiled. Since Louis and I had become official two months ago, things were going pretty well. It wasn’t as hard as I thought it would have been when he went back to London and it felt like we were talking all the time. “We’re good, thanks. We’ve been trying to figure out when would be best for me to come visit, but it’s pretty hectic at the moment with both of us so we’re just gonna wing it basically.”
