Summary: People used to believe in Heaven, In reincarnation, In life after death. It's human nature to be religious. Knowing that there's something after death besides an empty emotionless void was what keeps people going.
As time went on, people stopped worshipping omnipotent beings that whisk you away to Paradise after you die. But they needed some sort of net to fall on; without religion, without Heaven, without Hell, many people stopped caring. Why did they have to be good? Why did they have to live? Did it even matter?
Our world fell apart. Nobody worked, nobody donated time or resources because they didn't see the point. World leaders saw this happening, but there was nothing they could do.
Scientists developed a solution. They called it "Eden". Just as someone was about to die, Eden kicked into action and placed their conscious minds into an eden. A Heaven.
