Chapter 1: South By Southwest

AMANDA'S POV

I sighed as I watched the people walk past me. They went out of their way to walk around me and made me feel like a piece of shit. I really hated being homeless. Sometimes, I regret leaving Cincinatti.

"No mom, I got it. I can take care of myself. Austin, Texas will be a new opportunity for me!" I had told my mom. Boy, was I wrong. I was homeless within my first week. I had a friend out here, she said I could move in with her. But, I guess those plans fell through because, here I am, homeless and out on the streets.

I saw a cop and quickly stood up, leaning against the wall. We weren't allowed to sit or lie down, especially during SXSW. It made the city look bad.

"Hey!" I heard someone yell. I jumped and then realized they probably weren't talking to me. No one talks to me. "Hey, you!" The guy said again. I turned to see the man walking towards me. I pointed at myself and he nodded, walking closer to me.

"Hey, I'm-"

"I-I know who you are." I stuttered as I got a good look of his face.

"Really?" I nodded.

"Y-You're Anthony Padilla from Smosh."

"Awesome! Anyway, I thought you looked hungry, so here." He said, handing me a sandwich and a five dollar bill.

"O-Oh, I don't need anything."

"Come on, I've got plenty of food in my hotel room. Just take it." I shook my head. "Please." I sighed and grabbed the items from him.

"Thank you."

"No problem, what's your name?" I saw people walking past us with weird looks.

"Why is he talking to her?" I heard one of them say. I turned my attention back to Anthony, smiling at him.

"I'm Amanda."

"Well Amanda, it was a pleasure to meet you."

"ANTHONY! COME ON!" I heard Ian yell. Anthony sighed, looking down at the ground.

"GO ON! I'LL MEET YOU THERE!"

"FINE." Ian said and walked off.

"Come on." He said, holding out his hand.

"W-What?"

"Come on, let's go."

"Go where?"

"I don't know. Starbucks? McDonalds, whatever your'e in the mood for."

"W-Why?"

"I want to feed you more than just that sandwich, and I want to get to know you better, now come on!" I sighed and picked up my bag, figuring I wasn't getting out of this.

I slid my bag onto my shoulders and followed Anthony to the nearest McDonalds. We walked in and up to the cashier, the cashier scrunching up her face when she saw me.

"Can I help you?" She asked in a monotone voice. Anthony stepped out of the way, allowing me to order first. I grabbed the five dollars Anthony gave me and was about to pay her when Anthony pushed my hand away.

"Nuh-uh." He said and began ordering.

"Anthony, let me pay." I whined.

"Nope, are you sure that's all you want." I nodded and he told the cashier he was done ordering. He payed for the food and we waited for our number to be called.

"You really didn't have to pay for me Anthony."

"But I want to." He said and I sighed. We got our food and found a table, sitting in a booth across from each other.

"I want to go wash up, I'll be right back," I siad and he nodded. I went into the bathroom and washed my face before washing my hands and walking back out.

"Alright, before you start bombarding me with questions. Why are you out here?"

"We're doing a gaming panel at South By." He shrugged and I nodded. "So, why are you...you know."

"Homeless? It's okay Anthony, it's not a bad word. I was living in Cincinatti and I was like, you know what, I'm going to move to Austin! I have a friend out there who is letting me move in and this is going to be a new start for me and it's going to be awesome! Well, one thing led to another and I was out on the streets within a week."

"So...how long ago was that?"

"About a month." I shrugged. "And I refuse to go back to Ohio. Even if I had the money to go back, I wouldn't."

"Well, why did you move away?"

"I wanted a fresh start. I had a YouTube channel with some friends in high school, but I just wasn't feeling Cincinatti, or Ohio anymore. I needed to get out, I needed a change."

"Okay, well, what do you like to do?"

"Surf! I took a couple trips to California as a kid and once, I took surf lessons and fell in love."

"Awesome, I love surfing!"

We talked a bit more and, before we knew it, we had been sitting with empty wrappers in front of us for thirty minutes.

"You should probably get back to your hotel, it's getting late."

"Well, where are you going to sleep?"

"I'll find somewhere where the cops can't find me if I oversleep." I shrugged.

"Nonsense, come with me. I have two beds in my hotel room."

"Anthony, I can-"

"Stop saying you can't, because you can. Now come on. Throw away your trash and come back to my hotel with me." I sighed and nodded, knowing I wasn't going to get out of this either. I gathered up my trash and threw it away, walking out with him. We walked down a few streets until we reached his hotel.

"Here, follow me." He said, pulling me into a gift shop.

"Pick out some clothes for tomorrow, I can take you to the store tomorrow."

"Anthony, I don-"

"Come on Amanda." I sighed yet again and looked through the shirts until I found a black one that said AUSTIN on it. I took it up to the cashier and Anthony payed for me, leading me up to his room. We walked in and I set my bag down on the empty bed.

"I just have to go say hi to Ian and I'll be back."

"Alright, c-can I take a shower?"

"Of course! Do you need any clothes? I can lend you some of mine until we can get you to a store."

"I'm, um, fine."

"Uhh, I can offer you some boxers." He said awkwardly.

"Sure." I said and he dug through his clothes. He pulled out a clean pair of boxers and handed them to me. I walked into the bathroom and stripped my clothes off, climbing into the shower. I leaned against the cold tile wall, letting the warm water run on my body. It had been so long since I had an actual shower. It felt nice.

After about ten minutes of standing there, I washed my hair and got out, drying off with a towel. I pulled on Anthony's boxers and my new shirt. I hung up my towels and piled my dirty clothes next to my backpack on the floor. I climbed into the bed and snuggled into the soft mattress.
