:Chapter Twenty:
{ Blake's POV }
"So what's all this about your past?" I asked her casually, leaning my arm against the rail.
She laughed. "I'm not going to have this sort of conversation with you, Blake. It's just... weird." She made a face at me, and I smiled. She looked so cute.
"You have to tell me," I insisted, "We're bros, aren't we?"
She glared at me.
"What?" I mockingly gasped, holding a hand to my heart, showing how much she had hurt me, "We're not bros?"
She glared at me some more. "Fine. You ask, I'll answer."
I grinned at her, and she looked towards the floor, so I couldn't see her eyes. Not that I wanted to, I chastised myself. She was just another really fucking hot girl I wanted to screw, and to get to that point, I had to knock down a few walls. And then, I'll be able to get myself past a certain wall, if you get my drift.
Blake, you are a naughty boy.
"So," I started, "What's up with your parents?"
I could see the question surprised her. Her head snapped in confusion, probably expecting a question about Dylan or something, her brown eyes reflecting slight misunderstanding. I nodded at her for her to continue when she didn't speak.
"What about them?" She finally asked, confusion still in her voice.
I shrugged. "Well, I haven't seen them, and I've been over a few times."
She looked at me as though I was a puzzle piece she just didn't know where to put. The weak afternoon sun focused on her hair like a spotlight, bringing out blonde highlights, and her chocolate brown eyes looked somehow lighter, hazel, orange almost.
Holy fuck Blake, you sounded like a fucking chick.
"They're - they're really busy," Hayleigh said slowly, "They're environmental lawyers and they're on trips most of the time." She paused, thinking. "I think Dad's in Chicago or something. I'm not sure where my mother is." Her eyes darkened when she spoke of her mother, and I made it a mental Post-It note to know what it was one day.
"So how long have they been gone?"
She looked away. "Ever since we came here."
A month. That was pretty long. I almost cringed at the thought of the state of the house if my own mother wasn't home for a week. Kate's idea of cleaning was licking her plates after she finished, and my own? Probably best if it wasn't mentioned.
"Are you going to tell me what happened back at school?" This was the thing I was most curious about; what had happened that made her so upset? Dylan was a dick, that was for sure.
The reason why I had a bleeding lip was yes, because of Dylan. He'd been talking to some jock near the office, and pushed past me like I was some fucking statue. The point is, I was pretty sure he'd realise to watch where he was going after the incident.
"Dylan - " She hesitated, and bit her lip. I stared at it; was it normal for them to look so soft? She continued, "Dylanandiusedtogoout."
I shook my head to clear it. "Sorry, what?"
She took a deep breath. "We used to go out, back in Sophomore year, and it was really screwed up. We didn't leave things in a good place and the relationship only lasted a few months and my parents had a job offer somewhere else and I didn't want to go at first but then things got screwed up," She breathed out, her hands flying everywhere as she tried to explain, "So I said that I wanted to go and so did Nina and then we went."
It took me a minute to process this information. Dylan and Hayleigh used to go out? It didn't make sense. I was beyond confused. "That wasn't my question."
She stared at me. "What?"
"My question was to know what happened at school," I explained. She looked down, fidgeting with her hands. I reached out and grabbed one of them, really just wanting to know what had happened.
She looked down at my hands, which was now cradling hers. "I don't know, I just panicked. I don't - " Her eyes begged me to do something, "I don't want to see him again, ever. I can't move away until my parents come back and I have no idea when that is because they're too busy to call or email or to get someone to do it for them."
"Move away?" Surprise was written all over my face. "You can't just leave because of him, you're stronger than this Hails," I told her seriously, looking her straight in the eye to let her know that I honestly, sincerely thought that.
She looked away, a small smile lighting up her face. "I'm done with this talk. Anything else we can do?"
I shrugged; I didn't mind doing something else, but it just seemed as though there was something she wasn't telling me. "You got any ideas?"
She looked back at her, her eyes sparkling with excitement, and I felt myself getting pumped up for whatever she was going to say. "Well," She started, "I have always wanted to do this thing that involves toilet paper and the school bathrooms."
I looked at her as a wicked grin grew on my face.
