Chapter 1:
I could feel my breath becoming ragged as I ran through the dark, secluded forest, my bare feet hit the moist ground under them as I struggled to keep running, I could hear it panting as it ran behind me. The sound scared me enough to keep going, to the point where my feet were hardly touching the ground. As I was running I heard the waves of the ocean so I knew I was getting close to the beach.
My chest started to heave as I struggled to keep running the only thing encouraging me to keep trying were the deafening sounds of its footsteps. I caught sight of the beach and I ran to its shore hoping it wouldn't follow me out in the open. But as always I was wrong.
I caught sight of the black figure and I knew I was seconds from being caught, and being killed
My eyes scanned the scenery quickly hoping to find a way to get away from it. I caught sight of the cliff and saw my way out. I ran to the edge but just as I was about to jump, the figure caught my foot in its mouth and dragged me back. I screamed, fear making my heart pound in my ears. I could feel the claws hit my arms and legs as I cried out for help. Its head shifted so its eyes bore into mine. Its eyes were black just like the color of its fur, it raised its claws just above my head ready to strike.
My eyes widened and I knew I was dead and just as I felt the sharp claws make contact with my face I screamed "SAM."

I felt the shock as I opened my eyes and I quickly sat up my body sticky with sweat, I felt my body slightly relax as I scanned my dark room. But my heart was still racing furiously. That dream, I thought to myself had felt so real..., I shook my head trying to get the images out of my head. I sighed and laid back down but I knew that I wasn't going to go back to sleep.
I tossed around my bed trying to find a cool spot but it became an impossible task and I finally just sprawled on bed and closed my eyes. But my mind began to wander again on the dream.
Dreaming was rare for me these days and if I had one I would almost never remember. I was so tired that my body completely shut down whenever I closed my eyes so sleeping was more like getting the energy that I needed, It was no time to relax.
I closed my eyes tighter trying to focus on other things, my ears picked up on the soft sound of crickets outside my room, the hum of the refridgerator, and the leaky sink but none relaxed me they actually made more anxoius since they all started to blend into one sound. Just as I was about to scream in fustration I heard something else...
I could hear my mother's soft breathing as she slept, a sound so comforting that it reminded me of the days when I would crawl into bed with her and dad, most of the time I made excuses that I was scared but really I just liked hearing the sound of their breath as they slept. Even when mom and dad slept their breathing had been almost insync. My mouth formed a soft smile, god, they had loved each other so much that they were connected even then. I could feel something twist in my stomach but I refused to think about how unfair things were now.
I relaxed my body and I focused on it, letting my breathing match hers, it was so relaxing that to my surprise my eyes started to get heavy as I lost conscious the last thing on my mind was my mom's soft and steady breathing.
************
I woke up to the sound of something crashing, and I bolted out of bed. I could feel my body tense as I wondered what it could be. I could still hear my mom sleeping so it wasn't her.
A robber, I thought I snorted at the thought thats all I needed today
I opened my door and creaped out my door and into the kitchen, the light was on so someone was in here, I heard shuffling of things and someone mumbling to themselves. As I walked behind the kitchen counter I caught sight of a figure crouched on the floor and I couldn't help but roll my eyes
I got behind it and whispered " Seth, what the hell do you think you are doing."
Seth jumped causing his tall body to plummet to the ground he groaned softly still mumbling to himself. He looked up at me, some annyonance in his face but I think I still saw some traces of fear.
"Leah." he complained in a loud voice '' What's your problem."
I glared at him "Shut up." I hissed between my teeth "Mom, is sleeping."
He gave me a look that made it seem that I hit him with a rolled up newspaper "Sorry , I forgot." He mumbled while looking at the floor
I rolled my eyes ."Whatever, what the hell was that big crash."
He grinned sheepishly at me ."Um, I was making a bowl of cereal and I dropped the bowl." he pointed to the shards on the floor for further evidence.
I looked up to the ceiling trying hard not to lose my patience " Seth." I said camly "You are fifteen, a six feet fifteen year old, is it really that impossible to make a bowl of cereal without scaring the crap out of me."
He started to trace the edges of the tile on the floor " Sorry, Leah it was an accident." he looked up and shot my his wide brown eyes that shone with innoncence. I could feel my defense weakening even though Seth was a six foot, fifteen year old he was still my little brother.
I stared out the window, I could see that dawn was approaching so it was hardly even six, only Seth would be up at this time.
I sighed "Fine, just go sit at the the table, I'll make you breakfast."
He looked up his face full of shock " Really."
I snapped at him "Yes, now pick up the mess you made before mom wakes up."
He grinned "Thanks, Leah, you're the best."
I rolled my eyes, I swear food could make him happy in any situatuion.
