Prologue

Hot, red blood poured out of her mouth as she tried to say something, anything to the frail looking girl shaking in front of her. To reassure her that her mommy would be fine, that the long trek here wasn't for nothing.

The little girl could hardly comprehend what was going on, they had been traveling for days in the back woods when the Savages had found them. They tortured the mother right in front of the innocent girl, to teach the pair a lesson to never attempt an escape again. But escape they did, though not without consequence.

The little girl's mother could barely take a step, let alone survive the rest of the way. Still, the least the mother could do was give her child a warning of what was to come.

With their black hair matted with grime and filth, and faces smeared with mud and blood, they were barely recognizable. It would help her daughter to be disguised, and hopefully no one would take notice of her as she went back to the Communal.

Shakily, the mother managed to rasp out five words the sweet, naive girl would never forget.

"They will come for you."

Those were the last words of Sarah Barker.
