CHAPTER TWO:
The traffic was stop-start, wounding its way down the road like a great angry snake with car tires hissing over the wet road. Cars were hopping down the road like hog-tied frogs towards yet another set of road works, Logan sat in his car wondering how angry Charlotte would be for missing their date, it’s been a while since they last had a romantic outing. He grabbed his phone which now had service in it and proceeded to call Charlotte. The phone started ringing and she picked,
‘’hey love am…’’ he said but was interrupted by the smashing sound he heard,
‘’charlotte… charlotte….’’ He called out until he lost connection.
‘’what just happened’’ he thought to himself,
‘’that sounded like a crash’’ he concluded as he drove off the road into the side walk in haste to meet up with Charlotte.
The truck driver jumped down his truck and ran over to Charlotte whose car was now upside down, he help her out but she was unconscious and other cars drove by with a couple of them stopping to see what had happen. The ambulance arrived looking like a repurposed plumber’s van, the roof lights were on a board anchored with old ropes and only one headlamp in working order. The paramedics carried Charlotte into the ambulance. Soon after they heard a voice calling out,‘’Charlotte!!!...’’ Logan called out as he ran to the scene,
‘’let me pass, excuse me….’’ He said to the people standing around.
‘’Charlotte…’’ he screamed out with rage and in pain as he realized it was her car involved in the accident,
‘’sir calm down’’ one of the paramedics ordered,
‘’get your hands off me, that’s my wife’’ Logan said as he clenched his fists, then he made his way into the ambulance.
‘’baby am here, am right here’’ he said while holding her hand with his right hand and forking her hair with the other,
‘’her water broke so we have to hurry and get her to the hospital’’ the other paramedic said,‘’but she’s not due for another week’’ Logan said looking at them in shock as his jaw clinched.
The ride to the hospital was more terrifying than the accident itself; with every bump that the ambulance made Logan’s anxiety peaked higher, seeing Charlotte strapped into the stretcher he knew it was just the beginning.
The hospital corridor was stuffy and the air had an undertone of bleach. The walls were magnolia and were scraped in places from the hundreds of trolleys that had bumped into them. A picture of a beach was sprawled on each wall, each depicting beautiful scenery: rolling waves on idyllic sand, across was a tiny brown wooden coffee table holding health magazines.
After getting down from the ambulance, Charlotte was rushed in leaving Logan in the waiting room. Sitting in the waiting room was like being in hell for Logan, after sitting in the waiting room for hours Logan was near dying, the clacking of the keys coming from the receptionist and the constant boring commercials from the TV was driving him insane. He wanted to know what was going on with his wife right then, he couldn’t wait another minute.
It wasn’t long until he saw the doctor come out, the doctor had the posture of a soldier. Every step she took was precise and purposeful smiling in a cold and distant way professionals do. Her eyes were devoid of any makeup and her hair in a tight bun, not a strand out of place. Without hesitation Logan rushed to her,‘’how’s my wife?’’ he asked as his brows bumped together in a scowl,
‘’am goanna need you to relax’’ she replied,
‘’why? What’s wrong?’’ he asked again this time beating his hands on his thigh nervously.
‘’she took quite a hit and she’s lucky to still be alive, but…..’’
‘’but what?’’ he interrupted,
‘’how’s she and the baby?’’ he continued,
‘’well… we took her in for an emergency C-section and your baby girl is ok’’ she explained,
‘’oh thank God and my wife?’’ he asked,
‘’and that’s the problem’’ she replied,
‘’is she dead?’’ he asked with tears rolling down his chick and pain in his eyes.
‘’no, no, no… she’s not’’ she assured him,
‘’then what’s wrong’’ he asked,
‘’the accident was intense and we are not sure yet but it seems like she’s going into a comatose state’’ she explained,
‘’a comatose state’’ he asked in shock.
‘’we would have to run some tests, maybe a spinal tap or an MRI scan but I think she has a swelling in her brain from the accident and if that’s the case we may need surgery to relieve the pressure’’ she explained further.
‘’can I see her and the baby?’’ he asked,
‘’sure, that’s no problem. Right this way.’’ she replied as she showed him in.
