3: The Beginning

Well it's too late now. I think. I've already made my decision and it's final.

We all wait as the ceremony finished. When it was over, we all run out of the auditorium.

We run to the train tracks and everyone climbs on the rails to get up. I suddenly feel free.

We wait for the train to come closer. We all stand on the tracks.

Then, I hear loud noises, coming from a train.

Everyone ran further, which doesn't make sense honestly. Then after a few seconds, I understand.

I run after everyone and try to catch up. I can't catch up, I moved too late. Then a girl wearing Erudite blue looks outside and sees me. She reaches her hand out and helps me up.

"Thanks." I gasp as I try to catch my breath.

"No problem." She pauses. "What's your name?"

"Juliet. And yours?"

"Piper."

"Nice name."

"Thanks Jule." My heart aches

It reminds me of Nash. I eventually have to move on from my past.

After ten minutes, the train doors open. The instructor in our little train room yells.

"Alright everyone, silent! Okay, when we get to that building-" He says as he points far ahead at a brick building.

"We are going to jump. Understood?!"

Everyone nods.

The first few people begin to jump. Some don't make it, but others do. Piper looks at me, with determination.

She holds my hand and says,"On the count of three, we jump yeah?"

"Sure."

"Okay. Ready? One, two, and THREE!"

We jump off of the train. There is a big space between the train tracks and the building. A rush of excitement passes me and I feel the pavement on my feet. I squeal in pain and then the pain subsides. Piper helps me up and pats my back. I laugh and so does she.

"Alright everyone. I need everyone to be quiet." An instructor said sternly. Everyone gets quiet. "Everyone is going to jump off this building. Nobody will cower out or they will be cut."

There was silence.

"Anyone going to jump first? Someone has got to jump first." He says.

Nobody responds.

I step forward.

"I volunteer." I said in a serious tone.

"Oh. Okay the Candor goes first." The instructor says.

I step forward to the edge of the building. Everyone stares at me. I begin to feel a little nervous. I guess this is what I get for being first.

"Today would be nice." Another initiate said. I roll my eyes and walk faster.

"Hey don't say anything, you didn't want to go first which shows your twice the coward as she is stupid." Piper says. Everyone laughs at the other initiate, an Amity transfer. No wonder they switched out.

I step onto the ledge of the building.

I don't think I just jump. A rush of excitement rushes through me and I feel free again. Then something catches me. It was a net.

I lay down and the net bounces me up and down. I laugh and I see Piper move over to the ledge. She smiles down at me and jumps.

"WOO-HOO!" She yell with excitement. She waves her arms and does a flip as she lands on the net. We both giggle as we try to get off.

"Need help there you two?" Someone says as they come closer to the net. We nod and scoot closer to the edge of the net. He reaches his arms out and grabs Piper by the waist. He lifts her ups and drops her to the ground. She lands on her feet and waits for me to get down.

Then, he grabs my waist as I get closer to the edge of the net. Wow, he's strong I think as he lets me down.

Once everyone is down, the same instructor that was above, introduces us to the guy who helped Piper and me down.

"Hello everyone my name is Jake." He says. "I am a Dauntless representative. This here is Matt." He says as he points to the guy who helped us down. He waves but doesn't smile. He must be a serious kind of guy.

"Take it away Matt." Jake says.

"Alright everyone. I'm going to give you a tour around the Dauntless compound. Now follow me." Matt says.

Everyone walks behind him and stays silent. Matt seems a little more serious, mysterious, and a bit more scarier than Jake.

We walk into a kind of pit. Loud music was playing from there so I'm guessing we wouldn't do initiation tests there.

"This is the Pit. Everyone meets up here to do things and enjoy themselves on their free time."

Everyone looks around with excitement and awe. Piper taps on my shoulder and points at a shop.

"Hey look! They have a tattoo shop there. We can go get a tattoo later on, yeah?"

"Alright sure. That sounds like a good idea."

"Alright everyone lets get going." Matt says. Not to be weird or anything but he's actually attractive. If he put a smile on his face, then he'll probably be friendly-looking.

He leads us to a big room full of beds.

"This here, is where you'll be sleeping during your initiation training." He opens his arms wide and shows us the whole room.

"Wow." Piper says. "This'll be a good time staying here at the Dauntless compound."

"Well," I say. "I guess we'll find out."
