Alone

She walked alone

or so she thought

alone within the crowd

Her thoughts bristled at each touch

Her heart fluttered with her step

her rhythm a cadence

that others all danced to

in the shadow that she shared

they all wondered, and some cared

yet she saw no one

and felt nothing

the claustrophobia of solitude

as day gave way to night

she shed the world's garb

clothed insecurities clinging tight

a new shadow did she bare

and in the dark now void of light

the sheep did taunt her wakeful night

while insomnia beckoned like a lover

and betrayed her like before

her dreams her only refuge

haunting nightmares she embraced

her eyelids the screen

containing images much like life

seemingly seeing continued strife

fluttering with fear and trepidation

but when she felt, she was alive

so in darkness, binding blind

she happily wandered free of time

lost but in control, at least within her mind

and in the chaos she created

the sun saw not her soul

with subtle indifference

ignoring all the signs

she died alone, within a crowd

wrapped in her lovers arms.
