"I'm sorry, but does anybody else care that this... child put a knife in my car!?" the dark-haired woman exclaimed, breaking the silence. The other man, dressed in all black, raised a hand up towards her.
"Tulip, not now" he whispered. I turned my attention back to my person of interest, who had an extremely confused look on his face.
"I should start from the beginning," I said, moving closer slowly to the trio, "My name is Ruby... My father owned a small farm in Wantagh, New York. I was seven, and one night I was in the house alone. Dad was with my brother outside, putting in the animals. A fire started, and I couldn't get out...". His expression changed as I told the story, and his eyes widened.
"I was choking on smoke... I thought I was going to die... And all of a sudden something-- someone-- came through the window and pulled me out-"
"Cass-"
"Next thing I knew, I was on the wet grass outside, breathing fresh air... and a pair of tattooed arms were holding me."
The man came closer, hesitantly pointing a finger at me. "That... that was you?" He asked. I nodded.
He sauntered slowly towards me, staring me down. For years I had waited for this moment, and I honestly didn't know what I expected to happen after.
But I definitely didn't expect him to attack me.
In the blink of an eye, he held in a headlock, leaving me shocked and gasping for air.
"CASS!" the other man yelled, running towards us with outstretched arms.
"No, Jesse, she's one of them" he growled, his accent even thicker in his anger. I scratched at the tattoos forearms that once saved my life.
"What are you talking about?" the woman- Tulip- asked, carefully walking towards us as well.
"She's a hunter!" He yelled, lifting my chin with his elbow, "she's not telling the full story".
"What?" The two asked in confusion. My vision began to blur, and my throat was hurting.
"I saved her... and then Daddy-o shot me half to death" he replied. Clawing at his arms, I continued to gasp for air, although it was getting harder by the minute.
"Dammit Cass, let her go! She's turnin' blue!" The man- Jesse- yelled. A few seconds passed and I could finally breathe as I fell to the ground. I rubbed my neck as I coughed, dry and painful, trying to catch my breath.
"What do you want? Tell us the truth" A deep voice said, shaking the earth around us. I felt something stir deep down inside me, coming up my throat, something I couldn't hold down.
"I killed him".
My eyes widened. I couldn't believe I said that. I had never said that out loud. It wasn't even in my mind.
"H-how did you do that?" I asked shakily, pushing myself off the ground. I squinted at the man- I had only now realized he was dressed as a preacher.
"Never mind that," the vampire said, pointing at me, "you killed your father?"
I swallowed hard, balling my hands into fists. I took a deep breath and nodded. Everyone had shocked expressions on their faces.
"After you saved me I couldn't believe how he reacted. He said that you were the cause of the fire, that you wanted to kill us... that you were an abomination. I knew that wasn't true. You didn't hurt me at all..." I trailed off, rubbing my neck. He furrowed his eyebrows and frowned, looking at the ground.
"That year he put me in the cult. Learning the ways of the hunters and all that. I didn't last till the end of the year. The things that they did to your kind... it was inhuman" I explained, grimacing as I remembered the visions. Blood. So much blood.
"I couldn't stand it anymore, I wanted to get out, but he wouldn't let me... I killed him... I killed him and ran away" I said, ending in a whisper.
"You killed your dad... at seven years old" Tulip said. I ran my hands over my face and walked in a small circle. I couldn't believe this was happening.
Just then, a bullet came flying towards us, shattering the back window of my car, and breaking through the front windshield. We all ducked for cover.
"What the-" I peered under the car and saw a man, covered head to toe in grime, walking towards us, guns blazing. I heard car doors slamming and looked to my left, seeing the trio hopping into the car. Jesse stopped halfway, and looked back at me.
"Come on!" He yelled, motioning for me to get in. I jumped up and ran towards the Chevy, hopping into the backseat, bumping into another person. I looked up and saw a pair of green eyes staring back at me. A sudden feeling of embarrassment flooded through me and I quickly moved to the other side of the car as we sped away.
I looked out the back window and saw the man fully this time. He was wearing brown leather, and had long, shaggy hair and a beard. He stood Square in the middle of the road, without fear or remorse. That was what scared me the most.
"Who was that?" I asked, still staring out the window.
"No idea" Jesse replied, turning back in his seat. I turned back around and sighed, rubbing my temple as I leaned against the window.
I didn't know what I expected after finding him. But I know it wasn't this.
