Chapter One:
“Brother, are you really sure about this?”
“Come on. It’s the only time for us to search for food”
“But… what if the bad guys caught us?” he mean the cops.
“Don’t worry, I’ll make sure everything will be fine” I assured my 10 year old, brother Alvis. I knew the fact that there’s a great possibility that the cops might caught us… but it is the only way for us to survive in this dead land. If we’re just going to wait till the sun comes up, the chances of finding food is limited for there would be a lot of competitors to compete with. Unlike, if we hunt during midnight, where there is a fat chance to hunt more food that will last for a couple of weeks, if we’re disciplined enough to control our appetite.
Scarcity of goods slowly kills us… which is why we fight for anything; whether it be food or any valuable items; Such as knives, utensils, and even books.
We are the entitled ‘outcast’. We are those lived outside the main city. Living as an outcast is like a horrible nightmare. The only difference is that, this is Reality. As sad as it is we have to do everything just to survive… just like an animal.
Living outside the main city is an everyday battle. You need to kill for food. You need to step on to others in order to breathe. You have to outsmart others or trick them. You need to do something to quench your thirst. You have to do all sorts of these things in order to live. Why are we doing this? There is only one explanation… SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST.
I don’t like the idea of murdering other outcasts (not like I can do it though) just for us to survive so I opted to hunt during the night, although it somehow factors why some people die during the daylight; because they didn’t find any food in the morning... But at least I was not that brute. Hunting during the night could be very difficult since there are no lights outside the streets which could be very advantageous and disadvantageous to us, but we’re desperate enough to take risk. And that keep us alive up until now.
“Everything was dark during the night. It’s easier to sneak through the shadows. Now, do as what I had told you. Just follow my orders or else we’re screwed.” I said weakly. Alvis nodded in response. The cops might have rough time finding us especially during the night since there is no light outside the main city. We were deprived of light and electricity and even our daily needs. To say it bluntly, we are deprived of life…
“We just have to keep walking forward… just be calm. Okay?” I whispered. He did not say something. I have to fight my urge to fall back too. Once were caught by the cops, we’ll be dead. The main city sends out the police cops every night to watch over the gate to check if someone might have attempted to enter the main city. The main city is a place where luxury must be everywhere and only some had been chosen to live there. There have some rumors years ago that corrupt officials have something up their sleeves and they hold our fellow citizen captive; according from the rumors, there is something fishy in there that is why it has not been defiled by any outcasts or what they called us “pigs” (for we act like one as a matter of fact) for five years now. But I have never dared to attempt in coming close to the gates no matter how much I do wanted to from the past five years for I am scared. Because I’m sure I’ll die a meaningless death; and I care about my brother. Who would protect him if I’m gone? There are some who tried to enter into the main city but still failed, and there are some who manifest dissension in the shadows. But I didn’t heard about them anymore. Probably they were already dead. After a year the rumors vanished and everything went in chaos. I’ve never heard of them anymore. Everybody mind their own businesses for we have no time to mind those rumors. ‘Food’ is all our craving stomachs want. We do not need rumors to survive. After a year, everybody had gone insane and started to act like a pig. And the rest is history.
