"Hey, Yvonne. It's me. Mel."
"Is- Is Eric OK?" Yvonne asked.
"He's fine. Well-I wanted to call you because his birthday is tomorrow. I wanted to get togetherwith Ruth just us and him. For dinner. With everything happening I think he needs this." Melanie explained.
"Tomorrow? I don't know about that." Yvonne replied.
"Please. Please Pleeeeease." Melanie begged. Yvonne sighed.
"It's a great idea, but we're on holiday." Yvonne explained. "I wanted to get Ruth away from the madness of the press with everything that happened. I'm sorry, Melanie."
"No." Melanie sighed. "It's fine. It was worth a shot. I had a back-up plan anyway."
"Im sorry. You're a really sweet girl. You're all Eric needs now. You and Eric have a bond that he doesn't have with Ruth. He didn't have with Connor. And he may never have with future kids."
"Thanks, Yvonne." Melanie took a deep breath.
"Send Eric my love. Alright?" Yvonne asked.
"Sure thing. Bye," Melanie hung up. She put the phone down on the kitchen table. Eric walked into the kitchen. "Hi, dad. Are you OK?"
"Yea. I'm OK." He lied. "How are you?"
"Well the paparazzi died down a little." Melanie looked at her dad. He was not OK. He looked a complete mess.
"I asked how you were."
"I'm doing OK. This week has been a nightmare. Dad, I'm sorry." Melanie apologized.
"Don't apologize or give your condolences, Mel. He was as much my son as your brother." Eric sat down across from her.
"Yvonne says hi and sends her love." Melanie explained.
"When the hell did you talk to her?" Eric asked.
"Just now. I wanted to see if, for your birthday tomorrow, I can get Ruth and you can spend the day with your girls, but they're on holiday." Melanie explained.
"It's for the best. I don't want anyone over tomorrow. I want to be alone." Eric explained.
"Dad-" Melanie began.
"Goddamnit, Mel! I don't want anyone here on my birthday! Just me and you. Like it usually is." Eric yelled.
"Ok. I'm sorry."
"I'm sorry, It's just-" Eric was caught in a fit of tears.
"Dad- Please."
"If you weren't here- If you weren't here to help me I don't know how I would have gotten through these past few weeks. Mel, you are my rock. You always have been since your mum died." Eric explaned. "You have saved my life so many times."
"Dad-" Melanie felt a lump in her throat and her eyes began to well up.
"You have helped me carry on after every event that I have faced. You give me a reason to live."
I am so sorry! It turned out sad, but I think it came out OK.
