The sky was clear apart from the skyscrapers tearing through it, and the lights shining from the city towering above me. The music booming from inside the limo and the lack of traffic was a pairing that couldn't feel better. I, Luna Patricio, was riding a limo through the streets of New York on my eighteenth birthday with some friends to celebrate. I felt free and like I belonged for the first time in a long time. My light curly brown hair was flapping in the wind and my smile priceless. I shouted into the night and my friends dragged me back in for a dance party.
After a long night I arrived at home at around two am so I just headed straight to my room to not wake anyone. I drifted to sleep smiling at how well everything was going for me for once, I was headed off to college in Spain in a month and I couldn't be more excited. I woke up to an empty house since my siblings were off at school and parents at work. High school was over for me and it felt like a somber relief. I was excited to leave the dreadful place but I would miss my friends dearly.
I decided to start looking into apartments for when I move out of my dorms after my first semester. I know, crazy planning ahead but I'm nervous. Getting accepted to this college across the ocean was already a dream and I needed to have my life halfway planned out if it was going to work smoothly. I already sent out my resumé to three shops on campus and to three soccer stadiums because that's what I really wanted to do. I wanted to work with soccer stars and the sport itself was always a passion of mine even if I wasn't on the soccer team. I was doing volleyball for so many years I just loved playing it more.
Once I was done looking and finding a few I decided to rest my head about college until it was a week before my flight. I was sitting on the couch watching re runs of my favorite show Modern Family when the mail came. I sifted through it until something caught my eye. It was from a soccer club address and my heart raced. It had my name on it and I noticed the emblem, Sporting a club in this country Portugal. I was from Italy so I knew of this European country from a connecting flight I once had before going to Italy.
I tore it open thinking it had to do with a job somehow but it was a personally written letter. I head to my room, pausing Modern Family before I went upstairs, and sat on my bed.
'Dear Luna, if that is what they decided to call you, I have someone else who is able to write in English for me. I'm writing this to tell you the truth about your background if your new family hasn't.' I read allowed and stopped. Was this a joke? I panicked and threw it to the edge of my bed. Of course, until curiosity got the best of me.
'We were really young, you were too young to even remember. Our family, the four of us, got into an accident. Mom, dad, you, and I, your brother Rui. They died on impact but we were in the back seat and we were miracles coming out without a scratch, I mean maybe a few but nothing major. I was eleven and I can barely remember it but I do still have memories of that day. You were just a baby only a few months old, I remember your face. It's been sixteen years since I've seen you. They tore us apart and didn't let me see you ever again. Your family loves you but I miss you too. Luna please get in touch as soon as you see this.' The letter ended in his number, I assumed, and an email. I didn't notice until the writing smudged that I was crying because in some way I believed it, but I needed to ask my parents when they got home for sure. I loved my parents and would never trade them for the world and knowing that they weren't even really mine killed me.
I looked him up online and sure enough he was the famous goal keeper for the Portuguese National Team, winner of the European Cup. I remember being happy when they won because I rooted for that team after Italy was eliminated solely for Ronaldo.
He had a wife, a kid, he looked so happy and he was doing so well why did he just decide now to get in contact with me? I watched videos and I actually felt like maybe this could be true. Later that night after dinner, my brother and sisters went to bed, and I spoke to my parents.
'I got a letter, from my brother today.' I said casually and they just stopped like they had seen a ghost.
'Honey.' My dad began but I waved my hand.
'I just want the truth.' I smiled weakly and they complied.
'You were in a car accident eighteen years ago and your parents died on impact. You had a brother but he was only eleven and they said separating him from you wouldn't do any harm to either. We couldn't afford another child we just wanted one and it was an urgent case at the adoption center. You were our miracle after being turned down so many times. You made us want to have children of our own and we did. You are the light of our lives and we love you so much.' My mom smiled weakly and I wrapped them in a hug. I understood but I needed to meet my brother.
After discussing details with my parents they decided I should be off sooner than later. They planned for me to go to Portugal for two weeks before I needed to be in my dorms, and they would send my stuff according to the schedule we had before. In three weeks, I was meeting my brother for the first time, in the country that I was born in.
