Hope you like this one. I'm sorry it's pretty short. (Reader is female, feminine, whatever the fuck. I haven't really checked but I don't think I've been using many specific pronouns. Whatever)

Your parents were asleep.

Okay, so that's ready.

The world's dead, no one on the block has their lights on still. You know your room well enough to navigate the darkness without injuring yourself, but you haven't begun the process yet. For now, you're savoring the moment in which nothing and no one can hear or know about what's happening to you in your space.

And then you hear the dull thumping of sneakers against black asphalt outside your window, your lips curving upwards involuntarily at the sound. You hoped no one else in the neighborhood was up at this hour, but if they were, they would wonder who the hell that might be, meandering along their street at a pace most would seem to associate with fictitious characters or Olympian athletes.

Oh, but I know who that is.

Your grin only grew as you moved your curtains aside to peer at the mysterious figure that wasn't really a mystery at all.

Yeah, I know who that is.

You never really knew how she got in or how she got through your parents' ridiculously copious amounts of home security, but she managed to every time. Most teenagers would be on their phones at this hour, but although the device shone through the air, illuminating her still somewhat shadowy figure as she walked down your driveway, it suddenly became clear that the object was not her main concern at the moment.

You pushed the window open and poked your feet out one at a time, holding onto the railing for your life. Once your entire body was out, you closed the window and dropped down onto a thick branch of the willow tree just outside your house, careful not to spill from the porcelain mug as you climbed down until your feet touched the ground.

Another small but nevertheless important mystery you held unsolved was how she possibly managed to enter there before you, before someone who was actually already inside the house, but it somehow always happened, through some kind of little magic of hers. Brooke sat, legs crossed, on the roof of your mother's car, the sight of her blond hair and the two Pinkberry cups she held lifting your spirits even more, which you hadn't thought possible. The tapping of your digits against the half-frosted glass made her turn in your direction and wave while you ran to the quieter entrance to the garage.

"(Y/n)!" Brooke called, and it almost felt like you teleported to where she was as soon as her hand touched yours. Her grip helped to pull you up and you gave her a quick hug, taking a sip of your drink before setting it down. "What's it like to be free?"

"Mmm," you paused to consider your answer. She handed you the cup of frozen yogurt and a spoon. The corners of your mouth lifted as you stuck a spoonful in your mouth. "It doesn't suck."

"It doesn't suck?" Her eyes widened and she punched you lightly in the shoulder. "Come on, (Y/n), don't give me that! I got you Pinkberry! Granted, with Chloe, but still. I got you Pinkberry. At three in the morning. It obviously doesn't suck, girl."

"Okay, I guess it's absolutely fantastic," you admitted, laughing quietly at her mock-offended expression. "It's amazing. I couldn't ask for a more amazing friend. So how are things?"

"Pretty good," Brooke said cheerfully. "You'll never guess what happened!"

"Oh, really?" You tilted your head to the side and smiled slyly. "Try me. You got a dog? Your family's moving? You failed a test? You killed someone and need me to help you hide the body?" She wrinkled her nose and opened her mouth, but you continued, gradually growing more and more excited. "Your parents are involved in a government conspiracy and you have to pack your things and board a rocket into space because aliens are going to destroy Earth in a week and you want me to come with you?"
