I write short stories to get in the mood to write my stories so why not publish them?

On with the story ...

"Honey, why don't you give Old Mr. Scott his coffee? And I'll get the kids at table two." Amanda said. I smiled and grabbed the coffee pot.

"Hey Mr. Scott. How are you today?" I asked pouring him his second cup of coffee.

"Oh you know. Same old, same old. How 'bout you sweetheart? Anything new?" He asked.

I laughed, "No, nothing of the sort, but I'll keep you and Mrs. Scott posted."

"She's been wanting to see Sean. Why don't you bring him by sometime soon?" He asked.

"Oh I don't want to bother you and Lisa with Sean."

"We insist. It has been boring since the grandkids went back home."

"Okay Mr. Scott I'll hold it to you. Enjoy." I said ready to turn away when the bell jingled announcing someone's arrival. Everyone turned to the door and was met with a stranger. Someone new. Someone who didn't belong in town. He stood there at the door looking amused at everyone watching him with astonishment. He sat in Amanda's section. Scott nudged me over. Amanda wiggled her eyebrows and nodded her head in his direction. I shook my head but she wouldn't have it. Even Jeff, the cook, raised his eyebrows expecting me to do as Amanda was implying. I rolled my eyes and topped off Scott's coffee cup. I walked to his booth and pulled out my pen and pad.

"Have you had a chance to look over the menu sir?" I asked.

He looked up and quirked an eyebrow. "Um no but I only want a cup of coffee." He answered. I jotted it down and quickly walked back to the counter. Amanda chuckled, "Chicken." I handed the paper to Jeff and he smirked, "I knew you would chicken out." i snorted and took the plates from him for the children at table two. In all honestly they were both in their late teens. Seventeen actually. Both boys.

"Thanks Lizzy." Both said. I chuckled and patted their heads before walking back to the counter to get the stranger his cup of coffee.

I put the cup down and started to pour when he asked, "So your name is Lizzy?"

I bit my lip so I wouldn't say anything smart, "No." I answered simply.

"Okay." He laughed. "May I ask what is?" I filled his cup and put my hand on my hip.

"What's your name?" I fired back.

"Nuh, I asked first. You answer me then I answer you." He replied smartly.

"Elizabeth. Now you."

"Zane."

"So what's your story? You just passing through or what?" I asked.

"Wow straight to the point. But I-"

"Mommy!" Sean yelled running in. Everyone looked up and awed when he grabbed my arm and hugged it. Zane froze. I placed the pot down and picked him up. "Hey, baby. Why don't you go and sit at mommy's table and I'll be over there in a second. Okay?" I told him. He giggled and patted my arm wanting to get down. Once his little feet was on the ground he tapped Zane on the arm. Zane looked down and smiled. "hello mister. Are you new? Mommy says new people don't ever come here except us. She said that when I meet new people I'm supposed to be extra super duper good!"

Zane laughed. "Well it's nice to meet you ..."

"Sean!" My baby answered.

"Sweety go to the table." I ordered.

Sean laughed and ran to the table and sat down in his favorite spot. "Cute kid." Zane said.

"He is, isn't he."

"Just like his dad?" Zane asked.

I snorted, "I guess. If I knew who his dad was." I laughed.

"oh uh..."

"Lizzy, babe! Your parents called!" My best friend screamed running into the diner. Everyone gasped. My parents disowned me when I adopted Sean. And everyone in town knew. Austin, my best friend who just ran in grabbed Sean and held him to his chest. "My little Sean will not have contact with his so called grandparents who disowned his mother just because she adopted him!" Amanda grabbed Sean from Austin and kissed him on the cheek.

"Austin just tell me what they wanted." I said. I glanced at Zane. He was just watching with interest.

"Your mom got on the phone. And after the long explanation of why you weren't home and why I was there picking up the phone, she explained that they want to see you and your kid. That's a direct quote!"

"We can't have them damaging are babies!" old Mr. Scott said.

"guys it's f-"

"Lizzy, babe, your mom and dad are the spawn of Satan. Both of them have been horrible to you and Sean when you adopted him! And I swear-" Austin rambled on.

"If I may interrupt I would suggest going with a male figure with you and your son to visit your parents" Zane said wiggling his eyebrows.

"that's a great idea! You can take Austin!" Amanda said.

"no she knows Austin is gay." I answered.

"and proud!" Austin said. Everyone giggled.

"mommy why can't we visit grandma and grandpa?"

"Because baby they are mean!" I answered pouting.

"mommy you told me people deserve second chances and I think we should listen to them!"

"why don't I go with you Elizabeth?" Zane asked.

Everyone gasped. I thought about it. Why not? I mean it's just staged.

"okay Zane you can go with me but my son isn't coming. I don't want him near my family." Zane nodded and grabbed his things after kissing my hand and telling me that he would be here later tonight.

Later that night Zane was waiting by the cafe. He was dressed nicely. He looked very ... handsome. He opened his car door for me and allowed me in. I showed him the way to my parents house. My mother had grabbed me and hugged me but I didn't respond. Zane wrapped yiu are around my waist and held me to his side. I was starting to think he actually like me.

Then it changed when my father came home.

"Elizabeth! My baby girl! Where is my grandson? Zane Carter? What are to doing here?" my father asked.

"Zane?" I asked.

"... I'm sorry Lizzy, your parents sent for me to come and retrieve you. I am so terribly sorry." Zane answered.

"Ah I see well bye! And never contacte me again!" I shouted running out the door. Zane ran after me grabbing my arm and pulling me into his arms kissing me. I slapped him.

"I'm sorry Liz. Your father asked me to do it as a favor. Please, give me a chance? " Zane asked. I punched him one more time before kissing him again.
