Happily Ever After
Preface: The Wedding of the Century
Chicago stretched out miles and miles and miles, and at some point blurring into the blue of Lake Michigan. A warm autumn afternoon, the sun was high, the birds were chirping, the guests were seated; it truly was a magnificent day for a perfect wedding.
The bronze heavy doors at Holy Name Cathedral opened with a huff and all those witnessing today's vows stood in unison, turning towards the light, as the flower girls lined the path with white and pink rose petals while the pipe organs began.
He swallowed hard at the sight of his soon-to-be wife, standing there, being greeted by her father as he took her arm and she too caught his eyes.
Gorgeous.
That word doesn't even come close to summing up or even describing how immensely beautiful she looked. He finally got to see her in what she've been readying herself for months. A surprise as she called it. And it absolutely was a surprise worth waiting.
Gorgeous.
All he did was stare. Stare at his breathtaking future wife as she walked slowly down the aisle with her dad escorting her by her side.
He had caught a glimpse of heaven.
Her eyes didn't leave his the second she entered the nave with her father holding her. Much of the aisle seemed longer than ever, longer than the rehearsal indefinitely. So, she was grateful for having her dad holding her since if not, she's absolutely certain she would collapse.
Her father is her strength.
The guest were glaring, smiling, waving at her and taking pictures of her dress but one thing was for sure, no one made a sound.
The smile she had on her poised face mimicked his. Wide and toothy. They just cannot stop smiling. While there may very well be over two hundred guests of mostly family, friends, police officers and detectives in the gothic revival architectural style cathedral but to the both of them, it was only one another.
Everyone seized to matter.
Her soon-to-be husband, the love of her life, her everything stood even taller in his crisp hand stitched Tom Ford suit. If she wasn't mistaken, she could have sworn tears filled his eyes.
When she reached the end of the aisle, her father's sick and weak grasp held onto her arm a few seconds longer before actually letting go and handing her to her future husband.
"You treat her right, son." his coarse tone sounded even more harsh now that he's terminally ill.
They all knew a time would come for him to depart but what they hadn't anticipated was for it to be more sooner than later.
