"So, what exactly is transgender? Is it the same as transsexual?" My dad asked as he sliced some potatoes. I shook my head. "Not quite. Fist gender and sex are different. Sex is biological. Chromosomes, hormones, genitalia, etc. Gender is how you feel. How you dress, how you act. Transgender is transitioning from one gender to another gender. I want to transition from a man to a woman. Transsexual refers to a person who had a sex change surgery to change their genitals." I explained. My dad nodded, tossing the potatoes in some oil and spreading them out on a baking sheet. "Ok. Wait, what if your sex and gender align like normal?" My dad asked. I cringed. "First, dad, please don't use the term 'normal'. That makes it sound like being transgender is different, or abnormal, when its just another way of presenting. Second, you, mom and Jake are cisgender. Cis means 'on the same side'. You and Jake are cisgender males. You were born with male chromomes, hormones, and genitalia, and you identify with that. Mom was born with female chromosomes, hormones, and genitalia and she identifies with that." I explained. "Oh. Thats interesting." He said, pulling the potatoes out of the oven to flip them and putting them back in. "So, what can I do to help?" He asked. "Well, I need to see a gender counseler to be able to go in HRT." I said. "What?" He asked, very confused. I laughed slightly. "Hormone Replacement Therapy. It means once I see this specialist enough I can start taking estrogen and it will make my features softer, my voice higher, etc." I explained. My dad nodded. He pulled the potaotes out of the oven. "Elle, I may need to be retold this information a few times before it sticks." He said. I smiled. "That's ok dad." I said. He put the potatoes on the table. "Baked french fries anyone?" He asked, smiling. Jake and I both started eating. My dad smiled as we talked and ate.
