Friends, Or More?

Chapter 5

"So, do you know anyone here?", Caleb says breaking the silence.
"Oh no, let's say you're the first official friendly face I saw", I laugh.
"Well McKenna, I'm honored to be your first friend", he says with sincerity.
He's so sweet. Please let me know what he's doing with that snake of a woman.
"So like, do you have a boyfriend?".
What? I get caught off guard. I wonder why he asked. I answer him anyways.
"Umm no I don't actually", I laugh looking down and embarrassed.
He doesn't say anything so I look up at him again. He just stares at me and says how?
Uh oh. What am I supposed to say to that?!
"I mean I guess no guy has ever liked me like that".
"You're a wonderful person though I really don't understand why".
I shrug and change the subject, "anyways tell me about Veronica".
He smiles, " well she's my girlfriend as you know, um I've been dating her for 3 months now". Hmm, he didn't seem super excited to be talking about her. Oh well it's not my place to ask.
"Aww congrats, so what you wanna do now?" I ask hoping for him to come up with something since I got nothing.
"Can I see your room?"
"Yea sure let's go right up here", I gesture him to follow me up the stairs and he does just that.
I open the door to reveal my aesthetically pleasing room if I say so myself.
"Wow, very girly", he says laughing.
He walks over to my window and smiles.
"Is this your first time looking at ur house through this angle?", I ask slightly more curious than I'm letting on.
"No, well yes, but that's not why I'm smiling". He points to the window facing directly across from mine, " you see, that over there is my room".
Oh my god! I'm kind of freaking out, but I can't let him see that of course.
"Wow really?", I say nonchalantly.
He nods his head as I look up at him. I knew his eyes were blue but, in this lighting, I could almost get lost in his gaze. He turns to look at me directly in the eyes with a questioning eyebrow.
"You have really nice eyes", I say.
He chuckles, " Why thank you McKenna that's awfully nice of you", he says almost mocking me.
Just as I was about to say something his phone dings and he takes it out to open the text message. His smile instantly drops as he takes a seat on my bed. What just happened?
"Caleb, are you okay?". I say genuinely worried.
All he could say was no.
"What happened, can I ask?". To that he moves his phone towards my direction and I look at the message.
It was from Veronica, ugh even saying her name is gross. I read to myself:
"Hey Caleb, so this is probably unexpected and I should've said this while I was at your house, but I couldn't get myself to do it. So to make things easier I'm just going to say it. I'm breaking up with you. I haven't been completely honest with you and there's another guy I like. You're a great guy. Hope we can still stay friends. ~Veronica".
What was her problem? Who breaks up over a text, especially after she just came to see him?!
"Caleb.. I". He cuts me off though.
"No McKenna, don't say you're sorry, because I'm not sorry. I think it's for the best anyways". He said looking at me.
I've only talked to him 2 times, but already I can see the sadness in his eyes. Not knowing what to do I just hug him. He tenses up at first than hugs me back.
"You know, I'm always here if you need to talk right?", I say as I let go of him.
He looks down at me, did I mention he's much taller?
"I know McKenna, and I thank you for that, do you have a number I can get?", he smiles.
"Oh yeah of course, here you are", while giving him my number, we exchange everything from Instagram, to Snapchat and Twitter.
"I should get home now, it was nice talking to you, and thank you". He gives me a genuine smile. I walk him back to my door and right before I go to close the door he whispers "I'll snap you later". With a small giggle I close the door and take a seat on the couch, thinking about how awful Veronica is. It's crazy how I care so much about Caleb already.
I mean he's my friend, and you should care about your friends. Right?
