The clock ticked right past midnight as we pulled into the driveway. After a mundanely routine rehearsal dinner, the only things I wanted to do were crack a beer…or eleven and take off these goddamn heels and get out of this dress (click) that made me look almost human. Lulu kissed my cheek before shooing me out of the car with a beauty sleep excuse and I happily obliged.

I had enough kissy faces and sheer fabric for a lifetime, and it was only the rehearsal dinner.

I pushed the door open slowly, stifling a yawn, and there were my boys sitting together on the couch with Xbox controllers between them, murdering whatever poor souls had entered their game. How endearing.

Their heads snapped back when they heard my heel of on the hardwood floor and both of their faces stretched into smiles. The game immediately went on pause and Luke leaned over the back of the couch, “You’re home early.”

“It’s midnight,” I said, “Princesses turn back into peasants after midnight.”

Alex stood up and walked towards me, gesturing to help me with my blazer, “Funny, you don’t look much like a peasant.”

“Yeah well,” I let Alex help me slip out of my jacket and kicked my heels off by the door, “I’m in disguise, obviously. The magic wears off little by little.”

“How was the rehearsal dinner?” Luke asked.

“Romance overload,” I sighed, plucking my earrings out and tossing them on the kitchen counter, “Lulu beat me in a thumb war so I’ve got the maid of honor speech tomorrow which is balls and a half. Also I’m pretty sure Eric’s ten year old cousin called me ‘sweet cheeks.’”

Luke laugh, “And y’all call me a lady killer.”

“Yeah, yuck it up idiot. While you’re reveling in the smooth moves of a ten year old, my feet are practically bleeding,” I whined as I made my way to the fridge and searched for a beer, “What did you two do tonight while I was gone, besides mindless video games?”

“Y’know, man things,” Luke answered quickly.

“Yeah,” Alex nodded vehemently, “Man things.”

“’Cause we’re men,” Luke added.

“Right,” I smirked, “Well, I’m glad you guys had fun doing your man things with your muscles, minimal facial hair—”

“I could grow a beard if I wanted to,” Luke interjected, “I’d look dashin’.”

I rolled my eyes, “But I’m going to have to bid you both a good night. We’ve got an early morning tomorrow and we need to be—oh my god I sound like my mother. Forget it, I’m just going to bed. I’ll catch you both in the morning.”

The boys exchanged a look and Luke scrambled to his feet, “Uh, actually, Ly. Listen I don’t wanna be a bother or nothin’, but could I maybe sleep in your bed again tonight? Y’know, I gotta bad back from football and I just don’t wanna—”

“It’s fine, Luke,” I sighed, “If you want it, it’s yours.”

“You could always hitch up with Alex for the night,” Luke said, “I mean y’all did last night right? That way you don’t have to sleep on the couch either. You gotta big day tomorrow.”

Alex was quick to reply, “Yeah, I don’t mind at all.”

I looked them both square in the eyes, not quite understanding what was going on but too tired to really care about their scheming. Whatever path got me out of this dress and into bed fastest was the path I would take—and I wondered if that path was always going to lead to Alex. It seemed to a lot lately.
