"Why?" Asked my mother, looking at the detention slip in my hand.
"Andrew needed help with... schoolwork, so we went to get subs and came back like, one millisecond late. Wasn't my fault this time," I said. Her face brightened like her world got bigger.
"Ohh! Okay, this one is excused, but you better tell that boy to watch the time," she said, continuing to sweep. I rolled my eyes and went upstairs to my room. I closed the door anf flopped down on the bed, bouncing up a little before coming to a stop. Had he been... jelous? No, no of course not. Probably just something on his mind. He seemed fine in the car...
I took my thoughts to the shower with me, while blow drying my hair, while face timing Madison. I shook them off when she answered.
"I need help. Which dress?" I asked, holding up a short brown dress that drifts off the shoulders and a long navy blue strapless dress.
"As much as I love the brown one on you, you're going to freeze. Wear the blue one," She said. "I got to go, Jess and Cam are here. See you in a few!" She said, hanging up. I looked at the clock, 7:28. Shit! I quickly put on and adjusted the dress to my liking, grabbing my clutch and my phone just as a knock rang the house. Damn boy, he's never late. I heard him talking to my mom as I looked at myself in the mirror, deciding I looked okay and headed downstairs.
"Well, doesn't someone look like a heartbreaker tonight," Andrew said jokingly. I rolled my eyes and gave mom a kiss on the cheek.
"You better be back before twelve!" She called to us as we walked out. Andrew replied with a thumbs up, making her laugh and shake her head. We listened to music as we drove. He was wearing a blue button-up, and it looked really good on him. Like he was big money, but we all knew that we were all secretly broke by now. We pulled up right as Cam, Jess, and Mads did. We waited for Levi and Wren who were right behind us. We looked like spoiled rich kids, and that was the point.
"I knew the blue was better," Madison said to me. Levi nodded at me in agreement. We all laughed and went inside. "Party of seven, reservations under Peters," Madison said at the front desk. She's the one who always pays the bill, well, her father is. He likes to spoil her, even though she's really not a spoiled person.
"Right this way," Said the hostess, motioning us to a large table in the back. We all took our seat, me on either side of Levi and Andrew. I looked at the menu, and then at the prices. Everyone else was doing the same, so I slid the menu in front of me and Andrew and quietly said, "Have you seen the prices!? Crazy!" I whispered. He looked, and his eyes got big.
"Wow..." He said, looking at me. I didn't realize how close our faces were until he turned and our noses touched. I froze, and he did too. Stuck in that position, untilI felt Levi reach over and snatch the menu, exposing us. It's not like we were doing anything, we were just talking. We looked at each other with more surprise and scrambled away from each other, me hiding my blush in Levis' shoulder. Now before everyone goes nuts over me burying my face into my friend's shoulder, I should mention that he's gay. And if you were thinking about Wren, she's his sister. Okay? Okay. I kicked him and he winced.
"Well then..." Camie said, sending a flirty eye towards me. I tried not to blush too terribly hard, even though I knew I totally was. I got my composure and directed myself to Madison.
"Everything here is crazy expensive Mads, you sure about this place?" I asked.
"Pff. Yes, order whatever you want, Daddy said he'd pick up the tab. Meaning we can get whatever we want as long as its under ten thousand dollars, then he takes it from my account, but we should be fine. Eat up," She said with a smile. I smiled back and shook my head. We all ordered and the waiter took our menus. We made small chat in our little pairs until Jess brought up a subject I really didn't need to hear another time in the same day.
"So... I hear Andrew finally sent a message to his beloved," Jess said with a smirk. I could tell that it was something Andrew didn't want to be public by the look he shot over to Jess.
"Yes, I did. I've gotten no reply back, and probably won't for a while. Mads, how's your book buddy?" He asked, shooting the topic across the circle. Madisons red dress sparkled, unlike her eyes at the simple thought of the boy whom everyone calls her soul mate.
"Still as dismal as ever. Only talks about video games, sometimes I simply don't reply because I have nothing to say," She said, tucking her napkin under the table into her lap. "What about you, Levi?" A small smile came across his face, and I knew. Something happened and he didn't tell me!
"Levi! Oh my god!" I said. "Who? Where? When?" I asked. He laughed.
"His names Keller, and he's amazing. We have everything in common, and I think I'm already in love with him," He said. I was amazed, even Levi had found his person before I'd even mustered up the courage to write mine. "Oh! Speaking of our secret lovers, Wren! Do tell them!"
"I hate you," she said with a pause and a breath. "His name is Asa. He lives in the UK, and he's a total dilff. He funny too, and that's all I'm saying." She said, crossing her arms. "Amy, still no word?" She asked.
"No, none as of yet," I said to the table.
"Why don't you write first?" Cami and Jess said at the same time, which resulted in a kiss between them.
"I don't know, maybe I don't want to meet them just yet," I said, looking to my hands in my lap. Andrew stayed silent through the whole thing. I think he sensed the awkward vibe and commented on how the math test was "complete bullshit". I mouthed a thank you to him and joined the conversation.

After we finished eating, which was delicious by the way, we all went outside to go home. It was late, but Andrew and I waited for everyone to go before us. We sat on the bench outside, looking at the stars in silence. It was the middle of fall, meaning it was getting colder, meaning my strapless dress was giving me no shield from the frost. I shivered, and before I knew it I had Andrews coat over me.
"Thanks," I said, leaning my head on his shoulder.
"No problem. I brought it for you, because you're always cold, and you always forget a coat." He said, still looking at the sky. Ugh, how I wished we weren't bound by books. We could have free choice, whoever we wanted to love, instead of who we're forced to love. We stayed like that for a little while more until he finally took me home, said his goodbye to my mom, and went to his own abode. I, being very sleepy, went straight upstairs to change into PJs. After I put on my fluffy pants and polar bear shirt, I rummaged around in my closet until I found it. My own book, the one that holds my future. I got my special pen, hopped on my bed, took a deep breath, and opened it. Waiting for me was a sentence, one I thought i'd never, and I mean never, see.
"Um, Hi. I'm Andrew, I guess you're my soul mate?"
The scream I let out could be heard from everyone in the neighborhood. I know, because my phone went off, meaning the same boy who wrote in his book, just texted me.
