That was thirty years ago now, or so I've been told. Time is meaningless in this dark cell.
From what I've heard, SHE twisted the story to make it look like I was a monster. In HER version, apparently, I am an evil imp who came to help her spin straw into gold when her father told the king she had this ability, and I asked for her newborn daughter in exchange for my services. Then there was something about her having to guess my name, or some nonsense like that, but it doesn't make a difference. Half the kingdom believes that I am either a beast or that I am dead.
If it weren't for the kindness of the newest guard, Thomas, I would not be able to write my side of this tale. He took pity on me and asked if there was anything he could do for me. All I asked for was some paper and a quill.
I have requested an audience with the king, and it has been granted. I will be escorted to him momentarily, so my story now must come to a close. I plan to tell the king everything from the very beginning, including my father's first crime. There has been enough secrecy and pain.
I am ready to die. I do not fear it, for I know I have all of my loved ones waiting for me. The king will certainly put me to death, if only for telling him that he married a prostitute.
I leave these pages with Thomas, and I leave whoever is reading this with a final wish: please let the world know what truly happened. I want justice for myself and my family. My story must be heard, and SHE must be punished for her lies.
They have come for me. I am off to face my fate.
Please, reader. Let the world know.
Sincerely,
—Rumpelstiltskin
