Chapter Two - It's by Chance, Not by Choice
I felt a push and a shove. "It's too early to wake me up," I said sleepily. It could only be two people. One: my brother or two: my cousin. Henry sneaks in the house whenever he wants. We never have to invite him over, because he's just here most of the time. He said he comes for the food; his parents are Vegans, so they don't eat anything delicious.
"Please, just get up," that was Richard. He sounded different though. I opened my eyes slowly. He looked awful.
"Are you okay, Richie?" I asked honestly concerned. He shook his head and coughed. He sat at the edge of the bed beside me.
"I don't feel too good. We don't have any medicine in the kitchen. Would you mind going to get me some, please?" He explained.
"Go lie down and rest. I'll get you some medicine," I replied. He looked weak, so I got off my bed and helped him downstairs to the living room. Watching television when you're sick is a must.
I felt his forehead with the back of my hand; he was definitely sick. "I'll be back soon. I'm just going to go to the pharmacy that's five minutes away," I informed him.
"Okay, I'll be right here," he replied.
I walked upstairs to my room to change my clothes. I grabbed my wallet, keys, and shoes. Then I headed out the door and to my car to drive to the pharmacy. I usually go to Wal-Mart or somewhere like such, but those stores take longer to get to, so I went for the pharmacy close by.
I walked in the pharmacy and squinted my eyes to think of where I should go to find it. It's to the right. I walked to the aisle to the right and walked all the way down to the end where I found cold medicine. I think this will work.
On my way to the counter to pay I tripped over my own two feet. I heard someone snicker. I looked up, it was the cashier. How embarrassing? Not because I tripped over my own two feet, but because I just met this dude a couple days ago. He was trying to hide the smile on his face, but he failed.
I placed the medicine on the counter. "Did you find everything okay?" He asked.
"I did, thank you," I said. "How are you doing, Noah?"
"Besides the fact that my boss is working me from opening to closing time I'm doing great. How are you?" He replied. I made a disgusted face. I looked on the door to see the times he had to work today. It opens at ten o' clock and closes at eight o' clock.
"I'm a bit tired. My brother woke me up this morning and said he was sick, so that's why I'm here," I paused a couple seconds before asking, "Why would your boss make you work ten hours? Don't you have like different shifts here?"
"We do," he answered and then leaned in closer and whispered, "but he wasn't smart enough to realize that he let all the other employees go on vacation. There aren't many employees here already." He then leaned back to his original spot. I guess he didn't want his boss hearing that.
"Oh," I said.
"Your total is $8.67." I handed him a ten dollar bill and he gave me my change back. "Have a nice day," he said with a smile.
"Bye Noah," I grabbed the medicine and then left the store. He seems like a cool guy.
I went home; I gave Richard his medicine and he fell asleep a minute later. I called up Beth to see what she was up to. I feel bored already. I know that Tara went out on a date with her boyfriend today or she's going to. I looked at the clock and it's only 10:30 in the morning.
"Hey Beth, what are you up to?" I asked.
"Not much really; I just woke up," she answered.
"My brother woke me up this morning, because he wasn't feeling well. I went out to get him medicine and now he's dead asleep," I explained. I lay down on my bed while waiting for her to reply. I heard her sigh on the other end of the phone. "Are you okay?"
