I stared at the old ceiling. My eyes going in and out of focus. The old covers that were covered in dust laid below me. I ran my hand along the sheets. The dust rises before it settled back down.
I must've loved someone once.
That was the one thought that lurked in my skull. How could they say I didn't love anyone? I wasn't that selfish. And it's not like there is anybody to love.
People are disgusting. Especially the ones from where I come from. Horrid creatures. Slimy with greed or cold with the need for love and attention. But they all poke at your sides with all the hurt they ever felt and claw there way through your senses with anger.
In that place, everybody waited for the hero with a sword to slay their monsters then carry them away. Vowing to protect and love them forever. But I learned you don't need someone to protect you, you can protect yourself.
By removing your heart and soul from this planet's people.
If you do that, then no one can hurt you. No one. No one but yourself, and maybe a angry woman with a knife clutched in her hands.
I sighed and rolled on my side. The dust flying up again. I used my index finger to draw lines in the dust. Small circles and swirls.
He should be here any moment. Any given time. I sat up on the bed and looked down on myself. Or what was left. Nowadays I'm just bones. A Living skeleton. held together by the strings of the fates.
Leaping off the bed I walked across the creaking floorboards. The dust and dirt and smell of old waved over me in bundles, covering me in a coat of grime. Stiffing my way across the room I reached out for the red cloth that lay on the velvet clothed chair.
Running my fingers through the dress and clean cloth I breathed in it's scent or the ocean. Slipping it on I felt the silky fabric run it's way across my ribs. The skirt kissed the floor gently. As I shifted around the skirt fell into ruffles around my legs.
"Lovely.''
I turned around quickly. A boy. His light blue eyes looked more strung up and stressed then they usually did. His mouth was pressed into a firm line. The ghostly tint of his body seemed dull.
"Enzo,'' I stated blankly, "what a surprise to see you.''
He stayed silent for a moment more before moving toward the chair, "Dominique, you look as lovely as you always do.''
I scoffed and moved toward the bed, knowing that he meant the dress and not me.
I sat down on the bed in a big huff as he gently sat on the chair, as if he was afraid he might break it.
"If that's all you came to say you can leave.''
"Dominique-,'' Enzo started.
"You can go the way you came.''
"Dominique!'' Enzo shouted.
I looked at him. He never shouted. Enzo looked down at his lap. His ghost hair falling in light cascades over his eyes. His mouth frowned leaving his lips without there usual tinge of a smile.
"Dominique, you only have a year.''
I froze.
He looked up at me and his eyes pleaded for me to understand, "I tried to fight for you to have more time but. . .but the fates has already decided. If you don't do the dance by the end of the year you know what happens.''
"Enzo, I can't-''
"You don't have a choice,'' Enzo said firmly. The sadness seeping into his voice seemed to clog his eyes and make them cloudy. "Dominique, you're going to have to find someone to love if you want to move on from this world and not perish like the rest of you did.''
I breathed in even though it wasn't needed, "and who could I possible love, Enzo.'' I stared at him, anger filling my words, "what mortal would let a pile of dead bones love them.''
Enzo sat up in his chair and let his feet brush the floor. He started walking toward the wall. His pale hand fell on the drapes that had covered the window for a century. The purple cloth tightened in his grasp. Rage left my stomach and regret filled my breaths. Enzo was about to disappear again.
And it would be my fault since I pushed him away with my outburst. I kept my eyes trained on the ghost boy waiting for his leaving. His hand still on the drapes, wrapping the cloth around his wrist.
He pulled the fabric back, ripping it off the wall. The light flooded the room, making everything a white blur of sun.
When my eyes adjusted Enzo was gone. I mumbled a few curses. Then my view landed on the window. I could see perfectly what Enzo wanted me to see since the room was located on the fourth floor.
A moving van was pulling up in the driveway.
