"That's not-?" I asked, looking out into the deep blue swallowing mass of ocean. In the distance was a ball of colours being carried towards the horizon by the strong waves.
I sat on the sharp rocks, feeling them dig into my thighs and the warm sun caress my shoulders.
Shawn was floating on his back, letting the salty water draw his outline. In an instant however, he was upright, shielding his eyes to follow my gaze into the distance.
"Those aren't our clothes are they?" He asked with wide eyes, swimming over to me.
"Shit." I muttered, standing up and running over to the edge of the cliff. Indeed, it was bare.
I looked up at Shawn, the cool wind sending shivers all over my body.
"We're going to have to get our stuff from the go-kart building soaking wet and in our underwear." He winced, sitting down on a rock.
"And the metro." I moaned, pressing my forehead with my fingers. "They're going to think we're insane!"
I imagined us on a crowded metro, skin pressing into each other getting crazy looks from other passengers.
A giggle rose to my throat with the bizarre thought and I snickered, quickly coughing to cover it up.
I studied the floor, embarrassed to find such an awkward situation so funny. But then, I heard Shawn snicker too, and he didn't even try to cover it up. His face cracked into a huge smile and he laughed heartily, putting his head into his hands.
I let out a little giggle, biting my lip. But soon, I couldn't help it, and I let out a laugh. Soon enough, I couldn't stop and tears were rolling down my eyes.
"Don't you see." Shawn said, letting out the last few laughs he had within him. He took my hands in his and pulled me towards him. "Sometimes, happiness can be a choice."
"Shawn." I started. "These last few days I have been the happiest I've been in a long time. But that, this, it isn't real life. Not for me anyway."
He looked out towards the breathtaking view, the sun catching the highest point of his cheekbones.
"But you can make it real Rose. Choose things that make you happy. I hope that at the very least I'm showing you what things make you happy. What makes you feel alive."
I nodded.
"Sometimes happiness isn't about seeing what makes the world bad and choosing to ignore them. Sometimes it's just about...understanding them for what they are and being able to say that today I will have them under my control." Shawn said, his voice soft.
"You're right." I managed, pulling Shawn up from the rock he was sitting on.
He looked down at me for a second, a little smile plastered onto his face.
"How about we get home then?" He asked.
My eyes crinkled. "The adventure never stops with you, does it?" I laughed, shaking my head. "Let's go."
