Something was wrong with _____. Tokoyami saw it. He knew something was up. He may not be the most affectionate person when they were at school together, but he definitely knew there was something wrong. Sure she smiled every time they were together, but when he watched her from afar in class, he noticed something in the way she held herself. There was something sad and almost lonely about it. But every time he tried asking about it, he would get the same answer, over and over.
"Hey, _____ are you sure everything is okay?" he asked at lunch one day.
She would just smile cheerfully at him and say the same thing. "Yeah. I'm positive. You don't need to worry so much, Fumikage."
He would react the same way. Sigh and know that something was wrong. But he didn't want to push her and force her to tell her. He wanted to give her space and let her come to him in her own time. That is, until he went to surprise her with a visit.
Her parent's liked him, so they would sometimes let him in even when he hadn't run it passed _____ first. It was one of those things that he did to make up for the lack of physical affection at school or in public. When her parent's opened the door, they smiled like they always did, but he could sense that they were worried about something.
"She's in her room," her mother said.
Tokoyami nodded. "Thank you," he said politely before he walked through their home.
He stopped in front of _____'s door and knocked on it a few times. "Go away!" she called, her voice muffled by the door.
Tokoyami frowned and opened the door anyway. Her shout sounded to him more like a call for help instead of telling him to go away. She probably didn't know it was him, since he didn't even announce himself. When he opened the door, the room was darker then he normally saw it. The lights were off and the only illumination came from the window. _____ was on her bed curled up under the covers. She looked so much smaller.
"I thought, I said go away."
Her voice was completely devoid of her usual cheer and happiness. Her back was turned away from the door.
"Sorry, but I can't do that," he said as he walked over to the bed and sat down on the edge.
_____ turned and when she saw him, her eyes widened. "What are you doing here?"
"I can't surprise my girlfriend at home?" he said. "I've been worried about you lately."
She didn't say anything and rolled over so she faced him, but wouldn't get nearer then she already was. "You don't need to be. I'm fine."
"No you're not," he said. "I think it's time to tell me what's been troubling you."
She closed her eyes and didn't say anything for a really long time. Tokoyami reached over calmly and put a hand on her shoulder. She flinched at first, before she relaxed. He, then, leaned over and wrapped her in his arms, lifting her up and bringing her into his lap. She was so small, smaller then she normally felt when he held her. She curled up in his lap and hid her face in his shoulder.
"You don't have to be afraid of telling me," Tokoyami said. "I'm here for you, no matter what."
She started shaking and he tightened his arms around her, rocking slightly as she started to cry. Through her tears, she managed to tell him what happened, that she used to be bullied in middle school because of her quirk and it stuck with her. She's been depressed about it but she didn't want to trouble him with her problems, so she let him think that she was all right. When she finally stopped talking, Tokoyami was silent for a moment.
"I'm sorry," he said.
She lifted her head and looked at him. "Why are you apologizing to me?"
He reached up and wiped the tear stains from her cheeks gently. "I let you suffer alone for so long along," he said. "But I promise, I'm not going to let that happen anymore."
She blinked a few times and managed a small smile. It was enough for Tokoyami for now. He knew that a few words couldn't erase her depression, or make her feel better forever, but he could at least do something to help the healing process.
"Thank you."
"Just promise me that you'll come talk to me if something is wrong, okay? I can't help if I don't know what's wrong," he said.
She nodded. "I will."
