The History of the Famous Ford Mustang

The "Cougar Concept Car" (1962)

The Ford Mustang is a very well known American muscle car that is now sold in various parts of Europe and all around the US. Everybody knows it. Some people know of the first Mustang that was introduced to the world on the 17th of April in 1964. But what is not known about this iconic car was that there were two very different concept cars in 1962 and 1963. Lee Ioccoca and the Fairlane Group was working on the design for a new sports car in the summer of 1962. At first it was thought that this car was going to be a mid-engined roadster that was to be called the Cougar. Their plans began to change. John Najjar wanted to name their car after the airplane, P-51 D Mustang. However the group did not approve of their car being named after an airplane so the idea was set aside for the moment. The idea was brought up once again that they should name it the Mustang, but this time, Najjar decided to say that he wanted to name it after a type of horse that was also named "mustang." Finally they accepted it and their car was called the mustang. The car had a 1.5L V4 engine with 90 inch wheels. But of course this car was never sold and inly a few prototypes were made.
