September took forever to come.

By some miracle, Harry's wounds did not become infected. The blood dried and scabbed over quickly, and even ripping of some of the scabs accidentally while showering off the crusted, dried blood did not worsen them. It hurt like heck, but the gashes continued healing at an alright pace. She managed to keep away from Vernon for the most part as well, so that certainly helped. However, when it came to sniffing out weakness, Dudley was a bloodhound. He took his recently acquired Smeltings stick and thoroughly enjoyed bashing Harry on the back. She nearly bit her tongue off muffling her screams. Still, somehow her back managed to resist infection and begin the healing process. It was just painfully slow, and Dudley took every opportunity to hit her.

That was why the morning of September 1, Harry was ready to whoop and jump for joy. She had almost thought she would never make it, whenever the pain was especially bad, but make it she had. Of course, there was still an hour long car ride to suffer through, provided Vernon did not actually make her walk like he kept threatening to do, but the arrival of September 1 felt like the first rainfall after a drought. Nothing could bring Harry down, not even Petunia's snide comments and Vernon's gruff shove. Her trunk was snug and shrunken in her tattered backpack,
