High school was a bitch; You could confirm this to anyone at anytime if they asked. Your high school had a strict dress code (one which sometimes made no sense and made it seem like things were oversexualized), the kids there made you question how they managed to pass middle school, and the only sensible people there were a few friends of yours. Most of your time was spent in the library. Your parents always dropped you off at the school early, leaving you 30 minutes to read a book in the library before the bell rang for classes, and they always picked you up late. Your lunches were spent in the corner of the lunch room, eating at a small circular table with a group of friends, and then you sitting in the library alone the rest of the time. Most people in the school would tag you as 'anti-social', 'quiet', 'weird', but those didn't seem to bother you; you learned how to ignore and tune out what other peers said.

Today was another one of those days at school where you spent your morning time in the library. Today's outfit consisted of overalls and a loose white t-shirt, which wasn't unusual to see you wear. You had picked up a small copy of a novel in the bookshelf nearest you. It was an interesting book, mainly about a man named Ryan being chased in a forest. You never really had a thing for horror or suspense in fiction, but something about this specific author's books peaked your interest. Maybe it was because compared to the many horror authors in the library's bookshelves, this one actually used suspense correctly and could make the reader bite their lip wanting to know what happened next.

Just before you could finish the last chapter of the book, the bell for first class rang, which disappointed you. You closed the book and put it back on the shelf, walking to your first class of the day. Your first class was science as always. The teacher there was at least acknowledging of your gender and your pronoun preference, however the class wasn't to say at the least. You asked to sit in the front closest to the board and away from the rest of the class, but the teacher wanted you to sit with a group of students. You were lucky that they usually weren't in class half the semester, so it was quiet for you. That was, until there was a new student.

Damien was his name, he was a bit taller than you, black hair that sat mainly in front of his right eye, usually wore a flannel shirt and black khaki pants. He seemed to be the 'heart throb' of the class, flirted with most of the girls in the class, he got his work done though. You never really payed much attention to him. Most of that day in class you were listening to several tracks from your phone in your headphones at the loudest volume you could get it without your ears bleeding. That was, until Damien tried to get your attention and you could hear someone tell him to 'not bother her, she's moody'.

"It's they, them.." you muttered under your  breath. "And bold of you to assume that the only reason I don't like you is because I'm 'moody.'"

That sent a small chuckle out from Damien, which actually surprised you. Most people just rolled their eyes or pretended you didn't exist. He watched the previous person go back to their desk and ran a hand through his hair.

"They usually that annoying?"

You glanced over at him. "Every day."

"What's your name? I'm Damien, well, at least that's my name for today."

You raised an eyebrow finally turning your attention to him. "For today?"

"Ah," he smiles and gestures to himself. "Gender fluid. Today I'm feeling more like a he/him. I still didn't catch your name."

"(Y/n)..."

This small conversation marked the day you two started becoming close friends.
