Florence's POV
I grabbed my bag as I rushed out the door to meet my mum in her car. I jump into the front seat and plug my phone into the aux and started playing My Chemical Romance, oh the feels. My mum was strapping herself in and I followed suit.
Before my mum started the car she turned to me and said "Happy birthday" she smiled lovingly and fished around in her bag for a small wooden box. "Your father gave me these when he had to leave me and I think the time has come for you to have them"
I never knew my father. My mum raised me single handed after my father left her, her parents rejecting her for having me so young. I didn't have any brothers or sisters because my mum found it hard enough with just me and didn't need any more mouths to feed.
I opened the box which was lined with pale, blue silk and had celestial patterns of gold leaf on the inside of the box lid. Inside were two silver hairpins with black opal ends lay gently on the soft fabric.
"Thank you " was all I could say, the beauty of the objects took my breath away. "We better go now if we want to be on time" my mum reminded me. "Yeah, of course" I said, only half aware of what she had said to me.
