Jessica's POV:
I sit down next to her as I wait for Shawn. I swallow hard. My father is in the military....or he was.
"He got blown up by a bomb last night during an attack on his campus." I start to cry. I never really knew my father. He left when I was 4. "He's in the hospital right now in Syria. When Shawn comes, I need to ask if you can stay with him for 2 weeks while I go visit your father." I wipe my tears as my makeup runs down my face. We sit in silence for a few minutes until we hear the doorbell ring. I wipe my tears for the last time and plaster a smile on my face as I get up to open the door. When I open the door, Shawn is standing there in a tuxedo with a bouquet of flowers.
"Aww! Thank you Shawn! Come on in." I take the flowers from him and motion for him to come in. My mom stands up and shakes his hand like its the first time they've met.
"Hi, Ms. Rose." I noticed he called her "Ms." and not "Mrs." and for the first time it occurred to me that I never mentioned my father to Shawn.
"Oh, Shawn! Abby works just fine!" I start to get a vase and pour some water in it. "Shawn, I have a big favor to ask you." I try to block her out as much as possible, but it's too hard. As I put the assortment of flowers into a vase, I hear her talk about my father. Then she asks the question. It repeats over and over again in my mind: "Do you mind if Jess stays with you for 2 weeks while I go to Syria to visit him? If it's not too much trouble, of course." I put the vase of flowers on the table and walk over to Shawn and my mom; my heels clicking and echoing on the floor all the way there.
"Oh my gosh, of course she can! I'm so sorry to hear that this happened." I start to cry again so I bury my face in Shawn's chest. "She can stay as long as she needs." He looks down at me and strokes my hair.
"Thank you millions, Shawn! You're a lifesaver!" Shawn smiles. I pull away from Shawn's hold and wipe my mascara tears.
"Ready to go? You look beautiful." Shawn asks me. I nod but don't say anything, and we walk out the door together.
