The howling of the wind grows louder and she slowly awakens. Groaning, she sits up in bed. She goes to get up but her foot ends up slipping. She catches herself just in time on the bed side table "whew could have broken something" she laughs sadly. she stands up slowly, back creaking the whole way. she shivers as she looks outside at the snowstorm.

The old lady looks over her room and spots her fuzzy robe at the end of the bed. As she's about to grab it a flash of light hits her eyes. she looks toward the area of where the light originated and finds a small locket lying on the ground. she picks it up and admires the golden, heart shaped locket.

She turns the locket to look at the inscription on the back. It reads S.P.A. recognizing the letters to be initials. she turns the locket back over and opens it. It's a picture of Saige Penelope amans. Her sweet Saige, oh how she misses her. The old lady feels herself tear up as she stares at the picture. In the picture, Saige has hair the color of the fire and eyes of emeralds but the picture did her beauty no justice.

She was a true jewel and the old lady wishes she could have had more time with her. She wishes she could have watched Saige's hair turn gray with hers and watch as they both turn into wrinkly old ladies. Heart filled with sadness and regrets of the past, she gets lost in those emerald eyes hoping that if she stared long enough Saige would appear and walk up behind her and smile that sweet yet mischievous smile.

She must have been staring for a while because the next thing she knows one of the children, Cedric, pops his head through the door and asks her if she's okay. she startles but nods and motions for thim to enter. The other child follows close behind his brother. "Good morning children," she smiles at them before looking back at the picture "grandma would like to introduce you to a dear friend of hers."

The old lady sits on the bed as her old bones begin to ache from standing still for so long. The children run in and sit on the bed beside her and she tilts her hand so they can see the picture. "This, my children, is Saige." the old lady says with shining eyes. Cedric looks between his grandmother and the girl smiling in the picture. "You knew this lady grandma?" the eldest child questions looking at his grandmother.

She doesn't look away from the picture as she answers him." Yes, my child, she was a very dear friend of mine whom your old grandmother misses very dearly."  Cedric suddenly jumps and grabs a tissue from the box on the bedside table. He turns and walks up to the old lady with the tissue and hands it to her with concern written all over his face.

The old lady, confused, stares at him before he says "you're crying". Startled she reached up to her face and felt a wetness on her face. she gently sets the photo down and takes the tissue. She dabs at her tear streaked face before smiling at Cedric and thanking him. "I'm fine now dear." Dominic finally speaks up and says "Her hair looks like fire!" voice full of excitement. the old lady laughs before smiling at the children again and saying "Go on to the living room and I'll be there to tell you the next part of the story" Dominic smiles up at her and runs to the living room to play with his doll.

Cedric not quite believing his grandmother looks at her cautiously but walks to the door only to stop at the door and glance back at his grandmother before turning to catch up to Dominic. As soon as they exit the room her smile drops and she sighs. She changes clothing and looks for a chain to put the locket on. After rummaging through her bedside table she finds one and puts the locket on the golden chain. she looks at the locket for a minute before putting it on. The old lady decides she's taken up enough time and goes to the living room so not to worry the children anymore.

When she enters the living room she sees Cedric carefully putting a piece of wood in the fire and Dominic on the floor playing with his new Barbie. She notices it's still storming outside and gives a half-smile. Saige adored the snow. Her smile turns bitter but she shakes her head lightly before turning her attention back to the children. Cedric has sat down on the burgundy love seat reading a book on elephants while Dominic left the Barbie on the floor to watch as the flames devour the wood in the fireplace.

For some reason, the boy always loved watching the fire dance. She enters the room and sighs before smiling gently at the children. " Come now children," she says as she heads toward the rose-patterned chair. "ill tell you the next part of the story" she finishes at the same time she sits down in the chair. Cedric slowly gets up but leaves his book on the loveseat.

He then walks over to his grandmother "Grandma, we can have story time later if you want. We don't actually have to have story time today if you don't feel like." The child looks at his grandmother hoping she cancels story time for today. He's afraid she'll start crying again and he feels so useless when she cries.

Before his grandmother has a chance to answer he continues "Dominic won't mind. It would give him more time to watch the fire and I haven't finished my book yet." Dominic looks up at the mention of his name but goes back to watching the fire fairly quickly. Both the old lady and Cedric notices this and Cedric says "see?"

The old lady sighs but agrees, not ready to deal with more memories of Saige circling inside her head just yet. "very well then. I'll make breakfast. who wants pancakes?" smiling as she asks the children. "pancake!" Dominic exclaims. At the same time, Cedric is shouting "Me! Me!" the old lady laughs and goes to the kitchen to make breakfast. All the while two small humans run around her excited for pancakes.
