Long night

I take a deep breathe, and a million more, coughing as I do as the oxygen returns to my lungs, the force on top of me suddenly gone. I sit up to see Leon had the man pinned up against the wall. He yanks his hood down but it's a face I didn't recognise
"Who are you? Who are you working for?" Leon demands
"Answer me!" Leon says angrily, bashing him hard against the wall
"Ahh shit, alright alright" the man says, his New York accent strong as his hands go up in surrender. Leon still doesn't lessen his grip
"Then talk!
"They didn't give me a name, they never do, just gave me hers and a big sum of money"
"Money, you're a hitman?" I ask alarmed
"How did you have contact?" Leon asks
"Through email, I never saw a face and there was no name man, I promise, he left me the cash in a subway locker, planted the key under a framed advert!" He explains in a rush. For a hit man he sure was a coward when his life was on the line
"So you thought you'd kill an injured woman, you make me sick" Leon spits
"It's my job ... I don't ask questions!"
"Nurse!" Leon shouts, kicking the door open fully, making me and the hitman jump
Two nurses rush in and gasp at the sight
"Call the police, this guy broke in and attempted to take the life of your patient" The one nurse who was kind enough to get me a glass of water just minutes before looks to me in complete shock and I almost end up asking her if she's ok.
Leon escorts the man out of the room as a doctor and a nurse come in to check me over. I see police men finally arrive, Leon holding the mans wrists behind his back and handing him over to the police as he answers their questions. He shows them a badge and points to the room I'm in.
Me and Leon catch eyes for a few seconds before he looks back to one of the police men.

The other walks past them and comes in to me with a warm smile.
"Miss Rogen, I hate to do this to you at such a time but could you please tell me everything that happened" I nod and relay everything to the officer as he takes notes.
Once done he stands, thanking me.
"You're lucky that man was here"
"Don't I know it" I say looking out the window to see he was no longer in my vision, neither was the other police officer and the man that nearly took my life away.

I drink my water, my throat grateful for it and Leon appears as I set the glass down.
I smile at him as he comes over to me, standing at my side
"So, I guess that's two drinks I owe you"
He laughs, shaking his head
"Glad that bastard didn't take your sense of humour" he says causing me to hum a small chuckle.
"So, 3 days after the lab incident I have a hit marker on my head, coincidence?!"
"I don't believe in that kind of coincident, Clark needs to be stopped!" He says and I nod
"I need to report this back, there's no way this isn't connected to Clark
Evans! We'll put a stop to him, you have my word!"
"I know, I've heard only good things about the DSO" I say
We both share a smile
"There's going to be a police officer right outside your door and he's not leaving until you do"
I nod a thanks
"So, think you'll live another day without me?" He mocks
"Very funny!" I say getting a laugh from the man
"Glad your job hasn't taken the sense of humour out of you!" I say
"What can I say, I'm a humorous guy!" I smile and he walks towards the door
"You gonna be ok?" He asks, his tone now serious
"Yeah, thanks to you"
He smiles fondly and it's enduring to see, it was nice, knowing there was someone who cared about me
"Sweet dreams, Ally"

That night, long after Leon had gone I struggle to sleep, no surprise there.
I was still awake when the birds started chirping so I all together gave up on it.
The police officer escorted me to the ladies with my crutches and walked me back and he turned my tv on for me and I asked him to sit inside with me, hopefully the time will pass quicker with company.

It came to 11 and I still hadn't been told I could leave so I make my way to the desk just up the hall, officer Keeley right beside me.

"You have to be kidding me, are you serious?" I say angrily
"Yes, I'm afraid after last nights events Stanly wants you to stay an extra night, just so he can keep a careful eye on your health, you have been through a lot!"
"I know what I've been through! And I know I'm fine. There's not going to be another attempt on my life, and even if there was you guys didn't exactly do a great job at keeping an eye on me then did you!" I was taking my anger out on this poor woman but at the same time I was too riled up to care. I wanted to get out of here!
"That's enough, come on, let's get you a coffee, huh" the officer says and I take a deep breath to calm myself and angrily limp away with my crutches. I don't get far when I see Leon walking towards us.
"Someone's grouchy this morning, what's wrong?"
He looks to the nurse I verbally assaulted when I don't answer but she looks too scared to speak up
"They're not releasing her" officer Keeley answers for us.
"What, why?" Leon asks the woman at the desk
"Stanly wants to keep her in an extra night, she's been through a lot, he's worried about her"
"Mentally or physically?" I snap and the woman just looks like a goldfish as she struggles finding words
"Go back to your room!" Leon says to me before stepping right up to the counter
"Let me speak to her doctor" He asks her
"Stanley's on his dinner, sir" she answers
"Of course he is, tell him I'll be here when he's done eating!" He says walking past me to go to my room and I find myself smiling.
I hadn't known this man long but he sure did have a feisty authority side to him, I'm guessing he got his way a lot, when he wasn't on a mission. I liked this man.

"Why are you here, I didn't think I'd see you for a while" I admit carefully sitting on the edge of my bed.
"Thought I'd come and collect you, it's my day off"
I eye him curiously but he just smiles
"I have questions" I point out
He takes a seat in the visitor chair, leaning his left elbow on the arm and his hand on his face and his eyebrow arches up curiously
"Could you please give us some privacy Keeley?" I ask the officer beside me
"Sure" he says and I smile at him as he leaves the room

Leon had done so much for me but why? He could have dumped me into that ambulance and that be that but instead he came to the hospital after my operation to see me and then he came back again today. And now he was going to help me home. It didn't make sense, why did he care so much, I was just the girl trying to do my job, knowing it was a case for the DSO I was told to back away so they could save the humans the lab was secretly testing on. I was told to leave and failed, causing the man to halt his mission to save my sorry ass!
I may have been the person that made taking down a part of Umbrella possible but I was also just a scientist that got in the way. So why would he help me?

"So" I lean forward, being careful not to move my leg as I start my interrogation
"Your jobs dangerous, and you save hundreds of lives but, I wasn't a part of your job, I wasn't even supposed to be there, why are you helping me?"
"Because what you did, saved lives!"
"You go out the way to help all those people you save?"
"Just the ones I know do good in the world"
"How did you know that hitman was here, you left before he arrived"
"Actually, he arrived as I was leaving. I knew he looked suspicious and my gut told me to follow him, I always trust my gut instincts"
"So why are you here now to take me home?"
"I have nothing better to do today" he shrugs with a teasing smile
"Charming" I tease back with a smile of my own.
Admittedly I liked his answer, a bit too much.
