Usually Maxine didn't know what to expect for the current year as she entered it, but she had been warned about this year - her O.W.L. year.
Her mother and step father spent most of the summer repeating the same mantra over and over again. Do your homework. Do extra credit. Behave in class. Focus on your studies. While Maxine knew it would he best to follow those suggestions she planned to go through this year as she did every other year: Sleeping in the library during her free period and after classes, Quidditch before supper, doing her homework in the dead of night when she was able to focus.
Maxine didn't have the patience to sit for long periods of time durong the day with nothing to do. That's one reason why she joined the Quidditch team; it gave a chance to use the energy she had to save for all of her classes. Her O.W.L. was going to fill her with fruatration.
Her first class was Defence Against the Dark Arts, which had never been her favorite. All of the teachers she had ever had at the school were a dud so she definately did not have high hopes for this year.
Heidi woke up in a cheerful mood, ready for the day to begin. She had always been like that, up and on the move as soon as she opened her eyes in the morning. During first year Maxine had recruited her as her personal alarm clock as she could never get up on her own.
"No high hopes on Lupin?" Heidi asked her as the walked to breakfast. Her blonde hair was pulled into a high ponytail that swinged side to side with each step, almost hitting Maxine in the face.
Grimacing as the hair got closer and closer, Maxine took a step away. "No, not really. I mean we haven't had a good teacher in the past four years. Why would we have one now?"
Heidi shrugged. Unlike Maxine, Heidi saw the good in everyone and everything even if she did have a very badger like additude. There was a reason the girl was in Hufflepuff.
They walked into the Great Hall and took a seat at the end up the Hufflepuff table. They were between the Gryffindor's and Ravenclaws, a very bad spot as both houses were equally loud and no one could hear themselves think. A few moment after sitting down, Maxine's fellow beater Anthony Rickett took the spot to her left.
"Hello, ladies," he said.
"Good morning, Anthony," Heidi and Maxine said at the same time. For a few moments they complained about waking up early and not being able to sleep in until commotion drew the attention to the other side of the hall.
A Slytherin boy was swaying around dramatically side to side almost like his was going to fall over. When he slumped down onto the bench the other Slytherin's around him laughed. The Gryffindor's looked rather angry.
"Isn't that the boy who was screaming about the dementors last night?" Heidi glanced over at Maxine.
"I think it is. But my question is why does he look intoxicated?" Maxine responded.
