"Mom, Dad look at me! I can do a handstand now! I practised at school with Namkaarng and Aom." I said happily.
In the past, all I ever did was smile. My mother, father and I were what we thought of as the perfect family. We had everything we wanted. By the age of 5, I knew all my times tables and by 10, I was a high school student. I had been surrounded by education my whole life. My mother, who was a graduate from Harvard, taught me all I knew. Everyday, from the day I turned 12, she started teaching me Ecology and Business.
Business. That was all I knew. My mother only cared about the heir of the MB Corporation. She didn't even see me as a human. I was like a doll to her and she could do whatever she liked with me. She never acknowledged me, not even once, when she was alive but in the past it was different. She loved my father and I more than anything. If we had nothing, we would still be happy because of that love but over time that love faded and died. By the age of 9, I no longer knew the love of parents. When I was a child, she nurtured my and saw me grow with the loving eyes of a mother but before my 9th birthday, something happened to my mother, turning her into a cold, stone-hearted lady.
My mother and my father married at the age of 21, my mother still in her last year of university in Thailand and my father unemployed. My mother came from a rich family background and the only heir to the MB Corporation based in Seoul, Korea. She studied Business and Ecology during her time at university. My mother and father met at a party held by my father's best friend and my mother's classmate. My father was born to a poor family. His mother owned a side dish shop and his father owned a small casino but soon, the business expanded and they became the richest people in Thailand. My mother instantly fell in love with my father and they decided to get married. In haste, both my father's parents and my mother's parents were called to have a meeting. My parents told the news to their parents and they both agreed willingly. My grandparents all contributed to funding the wedding and within a week of the engagement, they were married. That rushed marriage led them to regret their whole lives.
After two years of being married, they had me. I was a child who was born to a mother with sickle cell so I was unwell at birth but it get better. Growing up with my young parents, I was happy and got whatever I wanted however, my parents were reckless and irresponsible and didn't have a clue about raising children. My mother worked hard to give a an education and taught me 5 different language and all my times tables by the age of 5. My father didn't care about anything and went out clubbing everyday and came home drunk. My mother was burdened by a child and a drunk husband.
My mother went to work at her father's company which she inherited. She had left the house all happy and looking beautiful in her skin-tight dress, stockings and 7 inch heels. From what I remember, my mother always had a pale face and was very skinny but had curves that my dad complimented everyday but suddenly he changed. Slowly, he began to drift away from my mother. He would usually come home late at night, staggering, reeking of alcohol then one day, I witnessed something terrible. My mother went to work, as usual, on a Monday while my father stayed at home taking care of me. It was a week before my 15th birthday. My mother's attitude had changed. She smiled less and frowned when she saw my father still getting over his hangover. It was the first time I'd met her. Min Sohye, my father's Korean girlfriend. I hated my father for this. A few weeks after I had turned 15, I came home from school to meet my mother's cold lifeless body on the floor of her deluxe bedroom. She had in a bottle of sleeping pills in her hand. I notice the note in her other hand.
Dear Lisa,
You know I love you very much but I couldn't take it anymore. I truly loved your father with all my heart but he left my side. Without him, I am nothing. He is my sun, my everything so now that he loves another woman, what is the meaning of my life. I hope you can live a beautiful and happy life with the one you love one day. Don't make the same mistake I made.
-Mommy
That day a part of my soul died. I loved my mother with all my heart and she just left me, like how everyone is going to leave me. Since then, my father became depressed. He cried for my mother to come back, for his love to stay with him. I cringed at the word love passing through his lips. After drinking one day, he turned to me,blaming me for my mother's death. I had enough, I told him that he was to blame for my mother dying due to his affair. He beat me up so hard that my whole body felt numb. I quickly packed my bags and went to my mother's parents house. they were visiting Thailand to wrap up some business with a Thailand branch of MB Corporation. My grandparents took me in with loving arms. They prepared for me to stay with them in Korea and go to high school there too. I transferred to the most prestigious high school in Korea and lived with my grandparents. The trauma of the past is still with me...
