CHAPTER ONE
CASSIE'S POV
"C'mon, Cassie! We have to be at the football game at 3:30!"
I groan and shut my locker to reveal the the face of my best friend, Caroline.
"Why are we going again?" I asked.
"Because team spirit blah blah and BOYS!" She screamed.
"Sh!" I quieted her. "Not so loud."
"The thirst is real," Caroline replied, wiggling her eyebrows. I reluctantly follow her through the status quo of high school to the playing field outside.
"See," she whispered and pointed to a dark-haired skinny boy on the lightweight team.
"Oh, that's Ralph, from my chemistry class," I replied. Her eyes widened.
"You know him too?" She asked. I squint at the boys on the heavyweight team tossing a football around. As I looked closer, I saw that they were way heavier that heavyweight should be.
"Whatcha lookin' at?" Caroline asked, sipping her soda.
"Ah, nothing." I say.
"Erm, Cassie?" I hear a squeaky voice say. I turn around to see Brent, a pimply, nerdy boy standing behind me.
"You dropped your books," he said, looking nervously around Caroline and me.
Hmm. I was sure that I had put those into my backpack.
"Thanks..." I say, while putting my books back into my backpack.
"Is everything okay?" He asks us, scratching his head.
Caroline glances at me skeptically.
"Yeah..." She says. "What would be wrong?"
"Oh, nothing, nothing," he says while scampering away.
"What just happened?" I asked Caroline. She shrugged.
STELLA'S POV
I was sitting at the football game, being creepily stalked by a small, nerdy, boy named Brent.
Every time I would look over at him and he would turn away quickly. He looked nervous and jumpy, like something bad was going to happen.
The game started with the heavyweights. Our team's starters had nobody I recognized from our school-they all looked like grown men who really needed a shave. I looked around me to see if anyone else noticed, but everyone was cheering and throwing popcorn.
I settled back into my seat, and spotted a lightweight blond on the bench. That was Jack, from homeroom. He was the only reason that I had actually wasted my time to come to this game.
Jack's face turned sour and I followed his gaze to a suddenly changing football player. I rubbed my eyes to reveal four giants, whom I could smell from the back of the bleachers.
I stood up, and found myself running down to the playing field. Confused, I looked around to see 11 others circled around the players. I recognized the twins Sam and Eric, Cassie, Maylie, sisters Caroline and Felicity, Simon, and footballers Maurice, Ralph, and Jack.
We all had the same confusing look on our faces as Brent came scrambling down the bleachers. He was yelling something at us, but I couldn't make it out.
"DIE FOOLISH DEMIGODS!" A giant yelled.
"Laistrygonian..." Caroline whispered.
A giant took a swing at my head, and I did a quick duck and roll before grabbing a pole out of a practice bag and hitting it on the top of its head. I kicked it in the knees while Ralph stuck a pocketknife through his toe.
Its toe turned into a pile of golden dust, and it groaned in pain. For a moment, I locked eyes with Jack. He had a mixed expression of fear, determination, and confusion. He nodded at me and proceeded to strike the being with the pocketknife, while the dust gushed out of the gaping gashes.
"MEH-" the beast yelled. It swung again at my body, scratching my shoulder. My shoulder screamed with pain, but it somehow filled me with determination as I stabbed, ducked and rolled until the beast was only a giant pile of dust.
I took a deep breath and stepped back to see the others next to similar piles; all beat up in different places.
What just happened?
Brent rushed over to us, mumbling something under his breath.
"Not safe... Need to leave... Now!"
We looked at each other in terror.
Brent's lost shoes had revealed goat's feet and he took his hat and horns appeared.
What was going on?
