I stirred the creamer into my coffee with no desire to drink it. Grayson sat across from me, eating his sandwich, occasionally glancing up at me and asking what's wrong. My face said it all. I was guilty.
"So," I said, trying to be nonchalant. "How's school? Am I missing much?"
"Not much." Grayson swallowed a bite of sandwich. "Actually, Cole got a new girlfriend."
I choked on my coffee. "Really."
"Yeah, but I forgot who," Grayson said. "But I think they might've broken up already."
"Really," I repeated. "Interesting."
"Kind of weird," Grayson said. "I definitely thought Cole had his heart set on you. It came to the point where I thought y'all kissed."
I choked on my coffee again. "Really." My hands tightened into fists. "I would never do that to you."
"I know!" Grayson grabbed my clenched hands. "I completely trust you, not Cole."
Thirty minutes of me gagging from my coffee and Grayson smiling, I finally left.
I was so happy not to be at school. I did not need to be around Cole right now. Thank the lord he didn't come by my house like I thought he would. That would be the last thing I needed.
Grayson's P.O.V
The way Cole was smiling at me made my head start to pound.
"You're lying." I could not believe that Cole and Beverly kissed. I did not believe it. Of course I could tell that Cole still liked her, but never would I have suspected Beverly of doing that.
"I'm really not," Cole smirked. "You should've seen it too, Beverly was pretty into it."
"Enough!" I yelled, looking out of the corner of my eyes to see a crowd starting to form. "Enough of these games, Cole. Do not lie to me."
"Grayson, Grayson, Grayson," Cole said. "Why is it so hard for you to accept the facts. Beverly wants me. She loves me. Not you."
"Cole-"
"Haven't you noticed the guilt in her eyes lately?" Cole smiled, that menacing smile. "What, did you think she ran over a cat in the road? That's why she's guilty? No, she kissed me."
I looked down at my clenched fists then looked back up at Cole, who of course, was still smirking.
He was lying.
I immediately threw a punch at his jaw, causing him to fall to the floor. The sound was a gut-wrenching crack, that made me wince a little. I watched as teachers swarmed the area and pulled Cole to the nurses office. As they pulled him away, he gave me the scariest glare I'd ever seen.
I felt a strong arm on my shoulder, and allowed the principal to drag me to his office, where I immediately regretted punching Cole. The principals face said it all. I knew I was in big trouble. I knew that I had nothing in my power to get out of this, just proving that both Cole and me were terrible people. And I did not want to be the bad guy in this situation.
Beverly's P.O.V
I bit my lip as I opened the door to find Grayson, who was standing with his arms behind his back and looking at his feet. Before he even walked in, I knew that something was up because of the way he grimaced the second we made eye contact. Immediately, I suspected that he knew about Cole and me. I began panicking as Grayson sat on the couch, a nervous look on his face.
I walked over to him, and sat across from him on the other couch. For a few minutes we said nothing, because we both knew. We both knew that I messed up.
"Beverly." Grayson rubbed the back of his neck nervously. "We need to talk."
"Grayson I-"
"How could you, Beverly?" He interrupted. My heart shattered at the sound of his hurt voice. "After everything?"
"Grayson," I said, my voice choked. "You do not understand how much I've hated myself these past few days."
"Why didn't you tell me?" Grayson asked. "Because I promise I would've been a lot more forgiving then, rather than now."
"I was scared!" I stood up from my seat. "Don't you get that? I can't lose you, Grayson. I couldn't stand the thought of losing you."
"And Cole?" Grayson crossed his arms.
"What about Cole?" I said. "I hate him. I told him never to talk to me again."
"Beverly." Grayson frowned, looking at the coffee table. "I know."
"What?"
"I know that you didn't want this," he said. "I'm putting in the little trust I have in you to say that. I believe that you love me and not Cole. I believe that kiss meant nothing. But the fact that you kept this from me, is what hurts the most."
"Grayson, please," I said, grabbing his hands. "You have to understand that it was all a reflex. I've never regretted anything else in my life."
"Please stop," he said. "I don't want to hear it. Stop apologizing, because it's not making it better."
"I know. But do you think you can give me another chance?" I said, practically begging.
"Beverly," Grayson started. "I want to so bad. You need to know that I love you and forgive you, but there's something in the way."
"What?" I asked.
"My mom." Grayson took a deep breath as I looked at him with a confused expression on my face. "She doesn't want us to be together anymore. She thinks you bring too much drama into my life."
"Oh," I said, already feeling my eyes tear up. "Of course, I understand."
"I should go." Grayson stood up from the couch and walked to the door. I opened it up for him, tears filling my eyes.
"Bye." I said, my voice flat and my lips quivering.
Grayson turned around. "Beverly." He stopped and stared at me. I had to do everything in my favor not to cry in front of him.
"Bye," Grayson said, stepping out of the house.
I closed the door and collapsed on the floor, shock taking over my body as my shoulders started to shake and tears spilled down my cheeks.
