“Then what’s wrong with you?” Jeannette accused. “He’s totally hot.”
“We’re just not interested in each other that way,” I defended.
“You know that Rebecca Martin pretty much hates you, right?” Hanna added.
“What?” I asked incredulously.
“She’s obsessed with Chase and thinks the only reason he won’t go out with her is because of you,” she explained. I laughed.
“Zoey, are you serious?” Betty accused. “You have to admit he’s gorgeous, and smart, and athletic – “
“Basically perfect,” Jeannette finished.
“No one’s perfect,” I rebutted.
“So, what’s his flaw?” Jeannette demanded. I looked at Lola hoping she’d change the subject.
“He can be really annoying,” I offered, knowing that wasn’t going to be enough to satisfy them.
“I think you should date him,” Carly said bluntly. “You two would be as perfect together as Lola and Vince.” I turned red.
“Speaking of Vince,” I finally saw a break, “Lola, what’s he doing tonight?”
Lola intercepted the girls’ attention and started talking about Vince’s perfections. As Lola fed the girls’ intrigue into what it’s like to be with Vince Blake, I thought I heard something off in her enthusiasm. I couldn’t figure it out, but there was something missing.
I let the buzz of voices continue without my participation. I settled back into the recliner, but I couldn’t help thinking, what was going on between Chase and me?
###
“We’d better hurry,” Lola said as we entered the diminishing daylight through the doors of the movie theatre. “We only have two hours to get you ready.”
“How long could it possibly take me to get ready?”
“Well, you have to take a shower, and make sure you shave. Oh, and I bought you more of that lotion.”
“I still have lotion left from the first bottle. And why are you concerned if I shave?”
“Well, now you have more. I really like it on you. It’s subtle and pretty.”
“I like it too, thank you. But you didn’t answer the shaving question.” She was beginning to make me nervous.
“You’re wearing a dress,” she revealed cautiously.
“Seriously?” I couldn’t remember the last time I wore a skirt. When was the last time I wore a skirt? Then I tried to remember what my legs looked like. Did I have any bruises or scrapes on my knees from the game? “A dress?”
“Zo, you’re going to look amazing.” Then Lola quickly added, “But not too amazing. The last thing we need is for him to want to kiss you.” She paused, looking me before sighing. “This is going to be harder than I thought.”
“I don’t think you have to worry about that,” I assured her.
When we arrived back at her house, the grand production began. While I showered and shaved, Lola went through her closet, rifling through what seemed like everything she owned. She wouldn’t let me see what she’d finally decided on until I was ready to get dressed.
Lola dried my hair and rolled it in hot curlers. Then my eyes popped at the sight of the curls dangling from my head after she unrolled them.
“Lola, you cannot let me go out like this,” I pleaded.
