"Veda, I'm home!" Raya sang as she threw her work bag across couch before glancing around for her friend. Her eyes scanned the room and she frowned at the disarray of furniture and books scattered across the living room floor. She flung her shoes to the door before cautiously walking through the clutter. She bent down to lift one of the books and read the notes sketched in the margins."Kai said this paragraph is too boring, though in my opinion, it's full of life to those who aren't complete idiots."
Raya let out a chuckle before she sat the book down and looked up to meet the eyes of a shocked Veda. "I thought you were working late tonight. I was going to clean up." Veda mumbled as her marble gray eyes took a look at the disaster all around. Raya shook her head and let out a small giggle. "At least you didn't try to cook again too!" Relief flooded Veda's eyes at her friend's lack of fury and she swiftly took to tidying up the mess she had made.
Raya watched her for a moment before inquiring, "Did you spend your entire day off with Kai?" Veda froze at that question and let out a mournful sigh. "I didn't know he was going to show up, I tried to ignore him but he was here for a little over half the day." Veda whispered as she slumped to the couch in defeat.
Without missing a beat Raya was swift in running to get Veda's pills from the hidden compartment beneath the sink. Veda was still seated when she returned but glanced up quickly when her friend returned. Raya didn't have to say anything for Veda to know what she held within her hand.
Raya passed the pills to Veda and took another look around while her friend swallowed them dry. She didn't miss that, while the room seemed trashed, nothing was broken or damaged in any way. Veda had never been one to do anything for no reason, and while it may have looked like a mess; every item had been placed where it was for a reason, though only Veda could tell you why.
Raya snapped out of her thoughts and turned to give her frazzled friend a cheerful smile. "I was thinking we'd have spaghetti for dinner. I'll get it started and you can clean up." Veda gazed at the books scattered across the floor and didn't reply as she rose from the couch and kneeled down to begin cleaning her mess.
Raya left her to it to run upstairs and change out of her scrubs into a pair of gray jogging pants and a ratty green T-shirt with a flowery pattern on the collar that her sister had picked out for her on their trip to the outer territories a few years prior, back when regulations allowed such trips.
Raya stopped to stare at her reflection in the mirror and let out a sigh. Her limp red hair was pulled back in a pony tail with strands poking out at random intervals while her bright blue eyes just looked tired after a long day at the hospital. Raya had always taken interest in her parent's work when she was younger and worked hard to be in her nursing assistant position she held, though all of that hard work and worry for Veda and her younger sister had clearly taken its toll on her health and it was beginning to show.
The young nurse-to-be was quickly snapped out of her troubled thoughts as the sound of classical music drifted upstairs and Raya physically cringed. "Now, I didn't give you those speakers only for you to play trash like that!" Raya shouted as the music quickly came to a halt and she darted down the steps.
Veda's marble grey eyes met Raya's as her hand hovered over her phone. "I-I was hoping it would make Kai go away." Veda stuttered as she gazed at the phone longingly. Raya rolled her eyes before walking over to take over the music selection. "Maybe hearing something more interesting than classical will help get your mind off of that troublesome Kai." Raya suggested as she put on a spunky tune that quickly drove Veda to flee to her room with her hands over her ears in disgust.
Raya watched her go with an amused grin before she turned to go make dinner.
